Zim police shoot MDC activist

  • Harare - Zimbabwean police have shot and injured an opposition official as the authorities continue their crackdown on the party, a spokesperson said on Sunday.
Philip Katsande was shot by police once in the chest and twice in the hands as they raided his home in Buduriro in Harare on Friday night, Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) spokesperson Nelson Chamisa said.
Katsande was in Parirenyatwa Hospital under police guard. He had one bullet still inside his chest, Chamisa said. Police have not confirmed the incident.
Chamisa said Katsande, a provincial executive member of the party, was one of more than 200 opposition officials and activists abducted or assaulted by police and state agents since the March 11 arrest and assault of MDC leader Morgan Tsvangirai.
Police say they are hunting for the perpetrators of a string of petrol bomb attacks across on the country that have damaged property and injured several people.
The authorities say the MDC is behind the attacks, but the party denies this.
