Dear Reverend,

Since you joined the great trek into the Diaspora I miss the dialogue we used to have concerning our beautiful but crying country. As I have no contact with the rest of the other colleagues I have to rely on you passing this message on.

You may not agree with me but the reason why the country is suffering is because of rampant corruption that is thriving because the majority of those who should be fighting for change have taken the easy route of going into self-imposed exile. No amount of talking on the internet, print and electronic media and appeals to Thabo Mbeki, George Bush, John Howard, SADC, AU, etc can compensate for the absence of organized support on the ground in Zimbabwe. President Mugabe is very right when he accuses the MDC of being a puppet of the West – this is because they rely on support by our former colonizers for any real pressure on the ruling party. Whenever the MDC’s power has been tested by having their leaders being arrested and beaten up, their elected councils fired from office, etc the only effective protest has come from their external backers and not from Zimbabweans on the ground. Naturally no sane African leader would condone an opposition party whose power base is so nakedly based on former colonizers. This is the message that leads to standing ovations for President Mugabe when he explains it to his colleagues at SADC and AU meetings.

The apostle Paul, in 1 Corinthians 4:20, says “The Kingdom of God is not a matter of talking but of power”. An opposition party can only win elections by becoming more powerful become than the governing party while in opposition. Power is not a result of getting into office, it is the requirement for getting into office. The reason why there is turmoil in Iraq is because the real power that removed Saddam Hussein was a foreign force and people do not like that. We certainly do not want such a foreign inspired regime change agenda - change should only take place when driven by our people and not by appeals to foreigners. The only external power that a sovereign people should appeal to is God, because the will of the people is in fact the will of God.

ZimDaily this week takes the 'Fair Deal' campaign on minister's kids in the lands of the 'Imperialists' to a new level. Buoyed by the successes we have scored in Australia and the numerous enquiries we are receiving from the EU, UK, Canada, USA and Scotland we officially launch the 'FAIR DEAL' Campaign, under the banner "Send Mugabe's crooks kids back to their evil fathers"

Disenfranchised Zimbabweans in the diaspora have limited options of tackling the regime. The government reaction to the recent deportations of Zanu PF brats by the Australian government clearly shows that they are rattled and shell shocked at the prospect of further deportations of their children from the diaspora.

If 8 deportations could cause the panic and pandemonium displayed by the government in arresting and charging MDC leader Morgan Tsvangirai and the reported urgency to resolve the Constitutional impasse in Sadc mediated talks, imagine how much impact it would have if the estimated 300 Zanu-PF officials' kids are all sent back.

We can only succeed with your help. This campaign is aimed at collecting primary data to be used by the host governments of the Zanu PF chefs' children. The sentimental nature of the issue will arouse emotions that subscribers will be tempted to express. While those emotions are justified they will not help the host governments' administrators track down the children to be deported.

For that reason therefore we seek only substantive data that will help the spoilt beneficiaries of our misery to be tracked down and sent back to their parents who are stealing to finance the luxury of their siblings in scarce forex while our children languish in a country without basic day to day survival needs.

We will therefore allow postings that disclose the Names of the children, their present educational institution, Country and Faculty of study, pictures and the position of their parents in the Zimbabwe Government if known.

There is some degree of urgency by some host governments to have the information availed to them so that they can process the deportations and or legal frameworks for the deportations to be effected.

Remember all these children are being financed by forex that the Zanu PF chefs have stolen from our fiscus and as a good citizen you have a duty to stop the bleeding of our county's economy by these people who deny us our basic rights.

For example we have Pride Chigwedere, the son of the misinformed Education Minister Aneas Chigwedere, hiding in America, enjoying the western democracy and everything that comes with it while our brothers and sisters are tortured, maimed, starved and made to go through an appalling education system.

We appeal to anyone with information on these kids to either contact the editor, editor(at)zimdaily.com or post the details anonymously below. Western governments are eager to extend the sanctions to these Kids.

Our leaders should be accountable to us by knowing the extent of our power over them. HELP US TRACK ALL THE KIDS WHEREVER THEY ARE ENSCONSED.

Fadzai Matongo daughter of Martin Matongo' who is the chief protocol in the Presidents' office is not the only person who has benefitted from the presidential scholarship through the back door. They is another Pretty Mushunje who is related to Chris Mushohwe the Director of the presidential scholarship. She completed a degree in business management in 2005 and was awarded the scholarship again to pursue a post diploma in accounting in 2006 in East London Campus. Fortunatley enough she failed last year and she is repeating the course using our tax monies, but it seems luck is with us as she has failed again and will be repeating the same course again next year.

Dumiso Dabengwa's stepdaughter Ijeoma Dabengwa is living in London after being in the States for years then travelling home on a fake passport, then being arrested on return to the States, where she then spent some time in prison. After completing her sentence she was to be deported back to Zim but some strings were pulled and she was deported to the UK coz she claimed that she would be killed if she went back to Zim. There is no evidence that PRIDE CHIGWEDERE ever left the US after completing his PhD in the Medical Sciences at Harvard University. He completed the undergrad program in medicine in 1997 at UZ. His father, Zim Education Minister Anus Chigwedere, is very proud of him. A few months ago, even ZANU PF was bragging about how Pride proved to all people at Harvard that Zim education is superior because it produced Pride. I am not sure of where he is exactly but we need to take him down with a hard tackle. To Pride I say go and work at Hwedza Hospital in your father's political constituency so you know what it means for us who are suffering here.

There is Dumisani Papaya here in Leicester, United kingdom. The guy used to be in the president's office and knows everything. He works hand in hand with an MDC man called Peter Ganya who is the mdc chairman in leicester. these two CIOs, i understand compile monthly reports and data on mdc activities and activists which is then sent to CIO central office in Zimbabwe. Dumisani is so influential to the extent that he now holds positions at his church (SDA) and other National church bodies and uses these positions to defend the Zanu pf Government and Mugabe. It has become very difficult here in the uk to mobilise churches to condemn Mugabe because in their ranks they have been infiltrated

THE Movement for Democratic Change and the Revolutionary Youth Movement yesterday successfully forced Zimbabwe's ambassador to South Africa, Simon Khaya-Moyo to agree to sign a petition penned by Zimbabweans in the Diaspora on the deteriorating situation back home and their demands to the Zimbabwe government for next year’s harmonised elections.

The petition would be taken to Moyo’s office in a week's time after about 500 Zimbabweans marched from South Africa's Union buildings to the Zimbabwean embassy in Arcadia demanding to be heard by the authorities there.

The two organizations are demanding that Zimbabweans living outside the country be allowed to vote in the March presidential, local and parliamentary elections. They want the Zanu Pf government to respect the rule of law but most importantly they want to see all stakeholders sitting down to write a new people-drive Constitution for the country.

The Zimbabwe government is the only country in the Southern African Development Community (SADC) which does not allow its citizens based in foreign lands to vote in national elections. They argue the process is expensive but embassy staff vote for their preferred candidates, a thing the Diaspora is saying should come to an end. SADC protocols, to which Zimbabwe is a signatory, clearly say that nationals living in other countries should be allowed to vote during their respective countries elections.

The MDC’s Nqobizitha Mlilo said such democratic campaigns, targeting President Robert Mugabe’s representatives wherever they could be found around the world, were necessary not only in pressurizing the Zimbabwean government to stop human rights abuses but also to send a clear message to the region that Zimbabweans are a peace loving people eager to finding a lasting solution to the political and economic crisis affecting their country.

They also want President Thabo Mbeki to hear them out as he continues to try and bring Zanu PF and the MDC together to find a way to solve the country’s political crisis.

“This is an expression of patriotism for people who have left their country to still be seen lobbying for the restoration of democracy so that they may go back. It is opposite to the view that that they are economic migrants hence the solution remains a political one,” said Mlilo.

One leading activists, who was arrested last week for organizing a demonstration, Reverand Mufaro Hove, called on the Zimbabwean government to stop torturing political opponents. He said Zimbabweans should unite and “fight the common enemy Mugabe”.

“I also call on you Kaya Moyo to join the struggle of liberating Zimbabweans from the oppressive leader Robert Mugabe as his dictatorship had affected everyone including those in Zanu PF,” said Hove.

Moyo agreed he would next week sign the petition from the two organizations. The petition will carry the Diaspora’s concerns over issues in Zimbabwe and the need to bring the country back to democratic rule.

Activists said Moyo’s acceptance to sign the petition showed a level of political maturity which was absent in Zanu PF as a party generally. Mugabe and his government have over the past few years been accused of using state machinery to cow opposition activists into submission.

APPEAL TO ALL JOURNALISTS AND WRITERS!

PREAMBLE:

It is desperately important that writers remind the people of Zimbabwe and any other friends of Zimbabwe of the socio-economic and political state of the nation of Zimbabwe BEFORE the farm invasions.

This is urgently and terribly important because ZANU-PF would like to establish their sickening peopaganda view that the primary purpose of the MDC was and continues to be to function as a "sellout organization" which Britain both founded and funded.

We therefore need to re-live the experiences of Zimbabwe BEFORE the farm invasions so that we can appreciate the very reasons why the MDC was formed.

WHY WAS THE MDC FORMED?

The MDC was formed in 1999 in response to a very desperate need for the removal of ZANU-PF, a Political Party that had ruled Zimbabwe since Independence in 1980.

There was a growing National Sentiment across the political spectrum that Robert Mugabe and "his" ZANU-PF had to be removed by any means possible from running the affairs of the Zimbabwean Nation.

These sentiments began way BEFORE the farm invasions (even as far back as 1986.)

The farm invasions got off in earnest in 2000 (to date) as a desperate measure by ZANU-PF to rekindle that Revolutionary Flame and try and woo the Black Electorate that had been swept away by and to the young MDC!

It is not a secret that if the MDC had not been there, the status quo would have still been with us (as far the farm "ownership" situation is concerned.)

In fact it was the ZCTU Leaders ie Tsvangirai etc who were asking why the Land Question was not being addressed so that the unemployed and the landless could benefit from having pieces of land allocated to them!

ZANU-PF then picked up the whistle and then ran away with it throwing away all logic in the desperate process.

To Mugabe this was a thick straw to hold on to (and true. for his personal political survival it was) but the otherwise noble idea was shipwrecked and the present precarious state of Zimbabwe is too clear to even try and hide!

It is therefore desperately essential that writers and journalists compile and reconstruct the landscape of Zimbabwe BEFORE the farm invasions so as to counter ZANU-PF's propaganda!

WHAT WAS WRONG WITH MUGABE AND "HIS" ZANU-PF?

Why were the people of Zimbabwe desperate to have ZANU-PF removed?

In the event of a collapse of the MDC (which I pray never happens), ZANU-PF Propagandists will tell the story of how Tony Blair tried to re-colonize Zimbabwe via the MDC and failed!

Remember Mugabe saying ," MDC isvikiro raBlairblah blah"

It will then be very sad and very wrong if the founders, members and sympathizers of the MDC will go down in History as having unsuccessfully tried to install a Counter-Revolutionary Political Party etc etc and all that shallow rubbish.
It must never be forgotten that Zimbabweans across the Spectrum ( ie workers, intellectuals, farmers, the unemployed, the enterpreuners etc virtually everyone was supporting the "MUGABE MUST GO" refrain!

We must be reminded of the rampant corruption that was increasing unchecked!

We must be reminded of the nepotism ( eg the evil and illegal removal of Engineer Simbarashe Mangwengwende fom the Leadership of ZESA to make way for Mugabe's corrupt, arrogant and inefficient brother-in-law, Sidney Gata.)

We must be reminded of the wasted resources where Zimbabwe was made by Robert Mugabe to adventure into the DRC to prop up the dictatorship of a certain arrogant autocrat called Laurent Kabila.

We must be reminded of the alleged looting of the mineral wealth of the DRC and the subsequent assassination of the youthful Minister of Defence Moven Mahachi who was calling for a thorough Investigation into the allegations from the UN that Emmerson "Soft-As-Wool" Mnangagwa and others were getting filthy rich from siphoning the mineral wealth of the DRC.

Please remind us of the economic mismanagement where ZANU-PF concentrated on buliding "white elephants" eg the new Harare International Airport etc in order to create opportunities for crooks and saboteurs like Leo Mugabe to siphon State and other resources.

Remind us of the assassinations and disappearances of many great and valuable citizens of Zim eg Josiah Magama Tongogara, Witness Rukarwa, chris Ushewokunze, Sidney Malunga, Zororo Duri, William Ndangana, Prof "Mas", Willie Dzawanda Musarurwa, and other lesser personalities like Ms Rashiwe Guzha, the CIO Boss Eddison Shirihuru, Albert Mugabe, Peter Pamire, etc etc ad infinitum.

Don't forget the Gukurahundi Masssacres where Robert Mugabe ( the insecure man of a serious inferiority complex) had the sole aim of was to crush ZAPU and bring them to a state of capitulation so as to remove the obvious challenge from the humble but very charismatic Joshua M'qabuko "kaNyongolo" Nkomo.

(By the way how exactly did his wife Mama MaFuyane die in 2003? Zvakafamba sei chaizvo-chaizvo?)

Remind us please of how the gullible people of Zimbabwe were fooled into believing that the foxy Robert Mugabe and "his" ZANU-PF had accepted the principle of Multi-Party Democracy when they expelled Edgar "Two-Boy" "Murambatsvina" Tekere and "encouraged" him to form his own Political Party.

Thousands were flogged and murdered by the CIO for the simple crime of belonging to Tekere's ZUM.

Dr Patrick Kombayi is a survivor of a Mnangagwa-masterminded assassination attempt.

Please kindly clear the air and remind us of ALL the evils of Robert Mugabe and his version of Liberation/ Independence!

Remind us vividly and in detail of the misappropriation of donor funds where the said funds were used to buy farms for a few top ZANU-PF officials and no thought was given to the land-hungry majority.

Above all, remind us of the frightening economic decline, the rising Inflation, the soaring figures of unemployment etc etc BEFORE the farm invasions.

HELP REDEEM TSVANGIRAI'S NAME!

I am on my knees beseeching you to remind us, remind us and remind us and this doing urgently to counter the heavy doses of ZANU-PF Propaganda.

Whether the youthful MDC Party succeeds to remove ZANU-PF or not; our children and their children should be able to get a-hold of the truth!
PLEASE CLEAR THE AIR!

PLEASE REMIND US OF THE TRUTH!

The issues are now clouded by silly debates about whether to participate or not in ZANU-PF's desperate games (like the stupid unnecessary Senate things) while the greater truths are forgotten in the confusion!

SADC returns to Lusaka

On August 16-17, the Southern African Development Community (SADC), which incorporates 14 (and potentially 15) countries, held its 27th Ordinary Summit Meeting of Heads of State and Government in Lusaka, Zambia. To emphasise its importance, the Summit Meeting was attended by all the SADC Heads of State and Government.

(Seychelles, a member of SADC for many years, was not represented because of a continuing discussion about the membership dues it must pay. The Lusaka Summit, fully sympathetic to the concerns of Seychelles, expressed its determination to do everything possible to ensure that this island-state, geographically and otherwise part of Southern Africa, resumes its rightful place as a fully-fledged Member of the Development Community.)

The SADC Brigade

Undoubtedly, one of the high points of the Summit Meeting was the launch of the SADC Regional Peace-keeping Brigade. This military-police-civilian brigade is made up of personnel drawn from 11 of the member states of SADC. It has been constituted to respond to the challenges of peace, security and stability that face our region.

At the same time, it constitutes a component part of the African Union (AU) Standby Force which Africa is forming to ensure that it has the organised and multi-skilled force to enable it to respond expeditiously to all situations of conflict on our Continent. Thus the launch of the SADC Peace-keeping Brigade represented, in concrete terms, the resolve of our region and continent to rely on its resources effectively to ensure peace and security throughout Africa.

It was indeed very moving to see the 11 mixed formations, each behind its national flag for purposes of identification, assembled on the parade grounds at the Lusaka City Airport. Nobody present at the launch ceremony could have avoided being moved by the fact that despite the variety of the national flags that led and identified the various formations, all the members of the Brigade marched and drilled with great precision, responding to the commands of one Commanding Officer.

Clearly, here, at the Lusaka City Airport, the combined political leaders of our region were presented with a palpable example of the readiness of our region of Southern Africa to act together, to promote African unity, to bind all countries of our region to the cause of peace, to guarantee peace, security and stability on our Continent, and to create the necessary conditions for the defeat of poverty and underdevelopment in Africa.

For us, as South Africans, the ceremony to launch the SADC Brigade had a special significance. We were very happy and proud to see members of our National Defence Force and our Police Service parade together with their comrades from the rest of our region. We felt immensely proud when Colonel Botman, of the SANDF, was called upon to assume the position of the bearer of the flag of the Brigade on the very day that the SADC Brigade was born.

Armed and peaceful

In earlier years, the apartheid armed forces, organised in the SADF, had brought death and destruction throughout our region. They had acted as an instrument of destabilisation, destruction, subversion and regime change in the service of the apartheid regime. Their presence, operations and incursions into virtually all the SADC countries had brought death, suffering and misery to thousands of people throughout our region.

Undoubtedly, among the officers from the rest of our region present on the parade ground at Lusaka City Airport, were nationals of various countries who had had to take up arms to defend the independence of their countries, which was under armed attack by forces of aggression that falsely claimed to represent our interests as South Africans.

At the same time, there were officers from the rest of our region who had worked with the commanders and cadres of Umkhonto we Sizwe, and the rest of our movement, out of the public eye even in their own countries, to contribute to the intensification of the struggle to defeat the apartheid crime against humanity. They did this knowing that inevitably, the apartheid regime, with a benign nod from the major Western capitals, would carry out terrorist acts in their countries, targeting both unarmed members and supporters of our movement, and the civilians of our host countries.

Recalling all these painful circumstances, during which the apartheid regime supported the LLA in Lesotho, Super-ZAPU in Zimbabwe, RENAMO in Moçambique, and UNITA in Angola, and various political formations, we could not but be moved to tears by the concrete representation of the fact that democratic South Africa has dedicated all our military capabilities to the cause of peace, friendship, solidarity and development in our region and Continent.

We were moved that men and women of the military, police and associated civilian forces from our region, and their political leaders, openly and unreservedly expressed confidence in our security forces as reliable partners in the common struggle to consolidate our region as an African perimeter of peace, democracy and development.

As President Levy Mwanawasa of Zambia said at the opening session of the SADC Summit Meeting, it was indeed an important matter of note that SADC was meeting in Lusaka for the first time since its formation in the same city in 1980 as the SADCC. As was correctly observed, this was only possible because since 1980, following the independence of Zimbabwe, both Namibia and South Africa had been liberated, ending the long period of colonialism and white minority rule on our Continent.

Regional solidarity

This statement was significant not only as a celebration of victory, but also as a signal of what Southern Africa must do to accelerate its advance towards the eradication of poverty and underdevelopment throughout our region, in the interest of the masses of the people of our region, who had carried the burden of the struggle finally to end colonialism and apartheid in Africa and the world.

Accordingly and correctly, the Lusaka Summit Meeting focused on the urgent task to transform the economies of our region, to ensure that as an integrated whole, they meet the aspirations of the masses of the people of Southern Africa.

In this regard, the Lusaka Summit Meeting was exposed to what can be done. President Bingu wa Mutharika announced that Malawi would donate 5 000 metric tons of maize each to Lesotho and Swaziland, in the light of their food shortages, caused by drought.
President Mwanawasa also announced that Zambia had donated 10 000 metric tons of maize to the World Food Programme (WFP) to be made available to any SADC country in need.

The Zimbabwe economy

The Summit Meeting also approved the urgent initiation of a process that would identify the measures that the SADC region should take to assist in the economic recovery of Zimbabwe. The report prepared by the SADC Secretariat in this regard
says:

"The restoration of the country's foreign exchange generating capacity through Balance of Payments support is crucial: however, the most urgent action that is needed to start this process is to establish lines of credit to enable Zimbabwe to import inputs for its productive sectors, particularly for agriculture and foreign currency generating sectors.

"SADC should do all it can to help Zimbabwe address the issue of sanctions, which is not only hurting the economy through failure to get BoP support and lines of credit, but also through reduced markets for its products. Sanctions also damage the image of Zimbabwe, causing a severe blow to her tourist sector.

"Zimbabwe on her part must continue to implement robust policies to reduce the overvaluation of the exchange rate, to reduce the budget deficit and to control the growth of domestic credit and money supply which fuel inflation, and to reduce price distortions in the economy. Equally important is the need to avoid frequent changes in policy initiatives, which have caused uncertainties and led to the view that the policy environment is unpredictable."

In this regard, on Monday, August 20, the Business Day newspaper published a wholly fabricated story alleging that the SADC leaders were divided over this report, describing a discussion at the Summit Meeting that never took place. This is consistent with an unethical practice in sections of our media in terms of which they manufacture news and information and communicate complete fiction as the truth.

The newspaper manufactured an unbridgeable "rift" resulting in a non-existent paralysis among the leaders, arising out of the discussion that never took place. The fact of the matter is that, acting on the recommendation of the SADC Organ on Politics, Defence and Security, (the Organ), the SADC Summit Meeting accepted the report on the Zimbabwe economy, as well as the proposal of the Organ that our Finance Ministers, in consultation with the Government of Zimbabwe, should use the report to elaborate specific interventions that could be made by our region.

The hostile allegation that our countries have recklessly turned their eyes away from the problems of Zimbabwe, because of the imperatives of solidarity, has always been nothing more than a product of propaganda, which all thinking persons would recognise as such. The reality is that in a very real sense the problems of Zimbabwe are our problems, in the same way that the problems of the rest of Southern Africa are problems for Zimbabwe as well. Our entire region stands to benefit most directly from the recovery of Zimbabwe, in much the same way as Zimbabwe benefits from the progress of the region of Southern Africa, of which it is an integral and inalienable part.

The Lusaka Summit Meeting reconfirmed these fundamental positions, which include unqualified respect for the sovereignty of Zimbabwe and the right of its people to determine their destiny. At no point will SADC and its member states act as a super-power that has the right to expropriate the people of Zimbabwe of their right to self-determination, as imperial Britain did

African unity & regional economic integration

The Lusaka Summit Meeting agreed that the 2008 normal SADC Summit Meeting, which will be held in our country, will launch our regional Free Trade Area. This Summit Meeting will also discuss the decision to transform the SADC region into a Customs Union by 2010. Before then, detailed work will also be done to prepare the basis for the radical improvement of all elements of the regional infrastructure. All this indicates the serious commitment of SADC rapidly to advance the critically important objective of mutually beneficial regional integration.

As we have reported before, the July 2007 AU Summit Meeting decided that the African Regional Economic Communities must serve as the driving force towards the political and economic unity of Africa. This important decision adds an important dimension to the historic obligation SADC has, seriously to attend to the issue of our region's integration, and its cooperation with other regions of our Continent.

This is particularly important in the light of the fact that our region conveyed a united view at the Accra AU Summit Meeting, insisting that the only rational and possible way to proceed towards the realisation of the objective of a United States of Africa is "from the bottom up", with the RECs, such as SADC, serving as the critical building blocks of the architecture out of which will be realised the age-old continental dream of African unity.

The 27th Ordinary Summit Meeting of SADC confirmed the determination of our region to respond to this challenge. The launch of the SADC Brigade, the first component of the African Union Standby Force, represented a practical demonstration of the commitment of the peoples of Southern Africa to help give meaning to the resolve of the peoples of Africa to take their destiny into their hands. This is confirmed by the fact that the entirety of the AU/UN "hybrid force" for Darfur, which will include SANDF and SAPS personnel, will be composed of African personnel.

As we knew and said during the difficult years when Lusaka served as the Headquarters of the ANC, Africa will be free!

Directionless opportunists?

I thought Mike Davis and the Combined Harare Residents Associations (Chra) were with us until I read his interview with Violet Gonda on SW Radio, attached below. Munyaradzi Gwisai who was also in the interview showed a remarkable failure to mature, or is it naked ambition on part of both gentlemen?

While acknowledging the need for unity, they tried to find any excuse they could to say the MDC was not the appropriate party to lead that unity, yet all the efforts that they were pointing to as successes in mobilising the people can be directly attributed to the MDC.

The reason is simple; they think that by acknowledging the MDC they will have lost the possibility of getting into political power themselves. I say slow down brothers; we are in this together and it's not too late to come back.

Mike has had a flirtation with organising Harare residents to demand their civic and consumer rights and now thinks they are his his people. I say, Remember Trudy Stevenson! And I do not mean it from a racial point of view, just that as soon as you lose direction they will also show you the door.

It is clear that Gwisai wants to use the now mobilised masses in his International Socialist agenda, which he does not care when it comes to fruition, as long as he has pushed worker consciousness that much further - even at the expense of postponing the deposition of the current regime and perpetuating the suffering.

Even WOZA, which was not in the interview but was being referred to as another centre for grassroots initiative, seems to be fumbling in the dark while refusing to recognise the leadership of MDC in any united movement that might succeed in mobilising the masses for the final push.

First, WOZA was part of the civic partnership, then it was not, then it was consulting its members about whether they wanted to be in the campaign, then it was demanding through the Press for that matter, representation in the SADC negotiations. I am glad it has gone back to the electrical power struggle with Zesa.

The SADC negotiations, even if they were to succeed, are not going to make Zimbabwe's future social order. It is still going to be decided by us the Zimbabweans and our Zimbabwean institutions, party cells, local community organisations, and people, WOZA and Chra included, because they are the ones working in these areas of social policy.

But demonstrating inclusion in what are essentially political negotiations between the two powers which have been recognised by the SADC as necessary to bring about the transition to peace and democracy in Zimbabwe, was completely misplaced.

The MDC through Mbeki's initiative is not negotiating the Constitution of Zimbabwe or the social policy just how Mugabe can be persuaded, pressured or otherwise kicked to step aside for the benefit of his people.

Of course the power of the MDC to be so recognised also comes from its partners, and their withdrawal weakens it, but they should recognise that they are under the umbrella of the Save Zimbabwe Campaign or the Crisis Campaign representing their particular social policies, not in the political power structure of MDC.

MDC itself is still struggling with elements within it about whether they should be united by being incorporated in the leadership, which the MDC President has said is not possible, leading to an attack from Job Sikhala at St Mary's where Sikhala said Tsvangirai is a Zanu (PF) sellout. Grapes are sour indeed.

The civics must not be deceitful and say we are fighting for children's rights, consumers' rights, civic participation rights or socialism, then, when they have opened our eyes so that we can see for ourselves that the MDC represents all these ideals, they start telling people that the MDC is not the right party to lead them trying to destroy the very house whose foundation they helped to build.

This is pure opportunism and it shows up in such contradictions. They mobilised the masses for the struggle, using their various tactics; the masses joined them, and together created the conditions for sustainable mass action. Now that the masses also see for themselves that their power to make a change comes from their united efforts and they gravitate towards the main stream, the leaders think they must stop them because they should be driving.

In one breath they criticised the international travelling and networking that the MDC leadership is doing and in the next they praise it for having been effective in mobilising the international community. It is clear they are trying to find reasons for negating the MDC for selfish reasons.

How can they be left out in race in which they never declared their intentions to run? I think it is time that opportunists within the civic movement were denounced for what they are. Their members, i.e. Chra and WOZA are already supporters if not full members of the MDC and should be told that their leaders are misleading them.

I think a clear message should go out to members that they are being led in some of these coalition partners by people who are trying to achieve political power by deceiving their members that they are fighting for residents' rights, socialism, women's or whatever it is.

Right now the crucial thing is creating a level playing field so that even the NDAs, the ZUMs, the Federal Parties and any new formations may be able to campaign freely, and in this struggle we need everybody.

When it is most crucial that they should lead their members to the united final push to create the conditions for a free and fair election, so that we can start creating the society we want, they start trying to hold back, while trying to negotiate themselves into political leadership.

Suddenly everyone wants drive the political bus. Who is going to be there still fighting for the women's rights, the community rights, for the inclusion rights for marginalised communities; who is going to oversee the drafting of a people's constitution, who is going to represent the residents of towns and cities, and hold the new political leaders to account for their promises.

Is the MDC government not going to consult these same organisations that were its partners in pushing out the dictator about its social policy? I should think in the affirmative. And, of course, if it does not they have every right to also show it some Tough Love all over again. So for me there is no privatisation of the democracy struggle by the MDC, rather there is an attempt to privatise the masses by those who are the MDC's partners and working with the masses.

Fortunately the masses have an inherent capacity to refuse to be privatised because their interests do not change - food, shelter, good living and better living, and yes participation in the running of their affairs.

ON FRIDAY, 22 June 2007, the government of Zimbabwe gazetted the Indigenisation and Economic Empowerment Bill. In broad and general terms, the objective of the Bill is to ensure that 51 percent of the shares of any public company and any other business is owned by indigenous Zimbabweans.

In addition, the Bill prescribes that no projected or proposed investment in a prescribed sector of the economy should be approved unless indigenous Zimbabweans hold a controlling stake in the investment.

Over and above this, all government departments, statutory bodies and local authorities and companies should procure 50 percent of their goods and services from a company with a controlling interest held by indigenous Zimbabweans.

Quite clearly, the Bill has far reaching consequences with regards to the issue of ownership and investment by companies in Zimbabwe.

In dominated social formations such as Zimbabwe, underdevelopment and uneven and unequal distribution of property characterizes the structural economic base of the country. Decades of colonialism have resulted in a skewed economy owned and controlled by a minority few whose mandate and interest was to serve the colonial metropole under circumstances wherein the majority black population was not a beneficiary of the national cake.

The colonial State was thus a gate-keeping State, with its most intrusiveand ambitious distortions based on narrow export-orientation and raw material production in which the African and African labour were mere objects of the reproduction of this client State.

Independence therefore, if it was to be meaningful, should have gone beyond the mere changing of the guards. It must involve the structural reconstruction of the State and the economy. Without this, independence becomes a meaningless charade that generates its own vicious contradictions, to the extent that in the overwhelming majority of cases, there has been no reconstruction and redefinition of the post-colonial State and post-colonial economy.

The colonial gate-keeping State has been reproduced under post-independent labels, but the old contradictions of deprivation and pursuance of narrow interests have been perpetuated.

The post-colonial State thus remains anti-majority and anti-development, but one, which without the military and economic might of the former colonial master, has to reproduce itself through patronage, coercion, repression, clientelism and rent-seeking activities..

The question that begs an answer is: Does the Indigenous and Economic Empowerment Bill represent a genuine attempt to restructure and reconstruct the State and the economy in order to transform Zimbabwe from the caretaker State it has been to a people-oriented economy? The answer, sadly, is No.

Between 2000 and 2004, the government of Zimbabwe embarked on a land reform programme that resulted in the compulsory acquisition of 11 million hectares of land. That the land reform programme was an essential ingredient in the process of reconstructing the State and the economy is not in dispute.

However, four years after the implementation of the programme, it is not in dispute the despite negligible pockets of success, the programme has been a cataclysmic exposure of Zanu PF's greed and asset stripping. The programme has been a disastrous expression of greed, aggrandizement, wastage and unbridled avarice, what Ibbo Mandaza described as "voracious primitive accumulation" in his foreword to Edgar Tekere's book, A Lifetime of Struggle.

The net result has been a total decapitation of agricultural capacity by more than 73 percent of the 2000 output. In the 2006 agricultural season, Zimbabwe could hardly produce 600 tonnes of maize and finds itself in the embarrassing position of having to import food from countries such as Zambia, who not more than five years ago, were entirely dependent on Zimbabwe's agriculture.

A cursory and casual drive through Zimbabwe's greenbelt (Banket, Chinhoyi, Alaska, Lions Den, Karoi) will expose the catastrophic consequences of Zanu PF's greed expounded in the name of the land reform.

For us in the MDC, the Indigenisation and Economic Empowerment Bill has nothing to do with the genuine economic empowerment of the indigenous population, a population which has done well on its own in asserting itself in the commanding heights of the economy. The financial services and retail sectors are both dominated by indigenous capital.

The Bill therefore is a mere avenue of further patronage and rent-seeking activities by the big guns in Zanu PF. It will allow Zanu PF and its acolytes access into the remaining sectors of the economy, in particular mining, which, because of high initial investment capital, it has hitherto been unable to access.

Indeed, empowerment will take place but of the very same looters that have brought the country's economy to its knees and that for the past seven years have been eating not just the fruits of independence, but the stem of independence as well.

The Bill will not empower the millions of Zimbabwean workers and poor people who are surviving on less that US$ 1 per day and are dying in their thousands every week. It will not empower the average Zimbabwean in Dotito, Highfield, Msampakaruma, Nkayi or Makokoba.

Over and above this, the legal construction of this Bill is suspect. The compulsory acquisition of 51 percent equity of companies clearly brings the Bill into conflict with property rights as enshrined in section 16 of the Constitution of Zimbabwe.

In addition it is in flagrant breach of Article 17 of the Universa Declaration of Human Rights.

Another problematic issue is the fact that all decision pertaining to the approval of any transaction and any change of ownership in respect of the Bill are solely to be handled by the Minister responsible for administering the Act.

Put simply, to the extent that the execution of the provisions of the Bill is solely resident in the Minister, the legal construction of the Bill remains suspect because subjective application is inevitable. One wonders why, as in other jurisdictions, those functions are not given to an Independent Empowerment Commission.

The bottom line is that Zanu PF has failed and has absolutely no answer or solution to the current structural crisis arresting the country. Instead of concentrating on resuscitating the collapsed supply side of the economy, Zanu PF is disingenuously seeking to destroy those remaining pockets of this challenged economy.

They will not fool anyone and history will judge them harshly!

As the explosive revelation of E. Howard Hunt's deathbed confession, in which the former CIA agent and Watergate conspirator admits that he was part of a CIA conspiracy to assassinate JFK, continues to rage across the Internet, the establishment media remains almost mute on what is undoubtedly one of the biggest stories of the decade.

Saint John Hunt, E. Howard Hunt's oldest son, joined Alex Jones yesterday to drop new bombshells about his father's story. Click here to listen.

Hunt was first made aware of what his father knew about the events of November 22nd 1963 when he came into receipt of hand-written memos that outlined the birth of the plot to kill JFK in Miami where it was discussed that a coup needed to take place in order to topple Kennedy and save the CIA from being splintered into a thousand pieces, as JFK had promised.

Saint John then opened his mailbox one January morning in 2004 to discover an unlabeled cassette tape on which his father details the identity of the individuals that were involved in the actual assassination of JFK.

E. Howard Hunt names numerous individuals with both direct and indirect CIA connections as having played a role in the assassination of Kennedy, while describing himself as a "bench warmer" in the plot. Saint John Hunt agreed that the use of this term indicates that Hunt was willing to play a larger role in the murder conspiracy had he been required, but was primarily used in an oversight role.

Hunt alleges on the tape that then Vice President Lyndon B. Johnson was involved in the planning of the assassination and in the cover-up, stating that LBJ, "Had an almost maniacal urge to become president, he regarded JFK as an obstacle to achieving that."

In the Alex Jones Show interview, Hunt reveals how Kevin Costner, star of the JFK movie, had shared a mutual friend with E. Howard Hunt and had subsequently visited Hunt in Miami in the interests of producing a documentary film based on Hunt's knowledge of the plot.

"Kevin Costner flies down and is introduced to my father by this mutual friend and Kevin just blurted out, 'so who killed JFK'? My father's jaw dropped and he turned around and looked at his wife and said, 'what did he say'?"

"So the whole thing just kind of blew up in its face and that was the end of that," said Hunt.

Hunt said that Costner had become "somewhat of a conspiracy enthusiast" after having made the JFK movie and was very interested in starting a project based on E. Howard Hunt's revelations.

"What my father devised was a code and a key to give Mr. Costner the relevant information without naming the names," said Hunt, "He listed out a chain of command and a timeline series of events and things that took place along with the most important players in the plot."

Costner considered the information to be "dynamite stuff," but elements of the "Miami mafia" derailed the project and the documentary never got off the ground.

Saint John Hunt also revealed for the first time that E. Howard Hunt thought that the Chicago plane crash that killed his wife in 1972 was not an accident. Investigators discovered at least $10,000 dollars in Dorothy Hunt's luggage, money that Saint John Hunt alleges was Nixon campaign funds used to payoff the families of the Watergate burglars to keep them quiet about the involvement of the Nixon White House in the Watergate break-in and cover-up.

"Later on in his life at one of these bedside confessions....tears started welling up in his eyes and he said, 'you know Saint I was so deeply concerned that what they did to your mother they could have done to you children' and that caused the hair on my neck to stand up - that was the first disclosure from my father that he thought there was something else going on besides sheer pilot error," said Hunt.

Eyewitnesses reported that the plane exploded above treetop level before it had even hit the runway.

Hunt said that "at least 20-25 FBI members," as well as numerous DIA agents were at the scene of the crash within minutes before rescue personnel had even arrived, and that this fact was attested to in a letter sent by the head of the Chicago FBI to investigator Sherman Skolnick.

Hunt cited numerous coincidences surrounding the aftermath of the crash, including Nixon's appointment of his henchman, Egil Krough, to the National Transportation Safety Board which investigates plane crashes, the very day after the incident.

When asked about the photos of the "three tramps" that were arrested on the scene of the JFK murder but were later ordered released, Hunt agreed that they likely showed his father and the two other key conspirators.

"As my father's son, every time I look at that comparison photo between the tramps and my father - it looks like my father to me," said Hunt.

Hunt also said that he was reasonably confident that one of the other tramps was CIA operative Frank Sturgis, who his father had also named as a key member of the murder plot.

Hunt said that his father was not one of the shooters but was more of a manager of the plot on a command level, but was later "hung out to dry" by the CIA and the government.

Asked why Hunt became a willing conspirator in the plot to murder JFK, Hunt responded,"Within intelligence circles, he felt that it was an imperative situation that President Kennedy not be allowed to serve in that office for any longer because there was a lot of crucial things coming down, there was the Vietnam war, there was also the anger and the threats Kennedy had made to splinter the CIA into a thousand pieces."

Hunt also said that his father eventually desired to become the director of the CIA and Kennedy was a direct obstacle to that goal.

Hunt concluded by agreeing that his father's legacy was that of a patriotic American who was manipulated and twisted by people like LBJ and Nixon, later to be deserted and have his family torn apart by these same criminals.

E. Howard Hunt finally redeemed himself shortly before his death by blowing the whistle on the JFK murder plot, but now there is a fresh attempt to bury this information on behalf of the compromised and cowardly establishment media, who have afforded this bombshell story almost no attention at all while lavishly devoting coverage to the mindlessness of Britney Spears' comeback and radio host Don Imus' off-hand comments.

Once again the responsibility lies with alternative media and the Internet to make sure E. Howard Hunt's story is heard.

EXILED Zimbabwean journalists and researchers published a one-off issue of the banned and closed newspaper, The Daily News dedicated to covering the current state of Zimbabwe's media on Press Freedom Day.

The paper aptly named The Daily News in Exile is a six-page report of violence, repression, and struggle in the troubled country.

Focussing mainly on the Zanu PF government's clamp down on freedom of expression, Geoffrey Nyarota (founder and former editor-in-chief of the The Daily News and now editor of the online paper - thezimbabwetimes.com) writes about "his experience as a Zimbabwean newsman and his fears for the colleagues he was forced to leave behind."

Other contributors to the special edition are Sandra Nyaira (former political correspondent with The Daily News), Nyasha Nyakunu, (Research and Information Officer for the Media Institute of Southern Africa) and Simeon Mawanza, researcher on Zimbabwe with Amnesty International.

The edition tells the story of The Daily News, from its founding in 1999 up to the time it stopped publishing on February 6 2004.

When it eventually closed in 2004, it had risen to become the nation's leading independent news source, despite the bombing of its printing press, the arrest of its staff, the occupation of its offices by police, and constant harassment by state monitors.

The Daily News in Exilecarries the slogan "Telling It Like It Is For World Press Freedom Day" (May 3). It carries detailed reports, statistics, editorials, cartoons, and photographs that recount recent and historical press freedom violations in Zimbabwe.

The paper was published by the Amnesty International Irish Section, and is written by Geoffrey Nyarota (the founder and former editor-in-chief of The Daily News), Sandra Nyaira (a correpondent for The Daily News), and researchers Nyasha Nyakunu and Simeon Mawanza.

Hi Rev. Mufaro Hove,

It's good to hear from you after a long while.

You say, "the problems besetting our beloved Zimbabwe are far greater than just Mr Blair, the land issue (which is very legitimate and had to be resolved) and the racism of a greater majority of the white people (which also is not in dispute at all!)". Why are you talking about Blair? I was very specifically arguing about why we shouldn't re-invent Tsvangirai.

When I read your letter I realised that you are frustrated because it seems I do not tow your line as you expect me to, as you said, "I've tried my best to show you". As I have always said Radical, do not force people to accept your ideas. People will always have their views on issues. It's not a scandal to disagree. If I am guilty of having a passion for criticising Tsvangirai (which is based on sound facts) then it's equally okay for you to spill out your passion against President Mugabe. No one condemns you as you do to other people when they hold different opinions on these matters. You say, "Tsvangirai may be as ugly or as dull or whatever any intellectual like yourself may label him but he is our only hope!" That's your problem. Because you see him as your only hope then you do not want him to stand scrutiny. I am sure you wouldn't want to have a president who has not been scrutinised. If you want, then fine, but I do not, hence my scrutiny of Tsvangirai.

You were so convinced in your mind that you would go out, tell people your story and hope that they would consume it passively. No Radical. There are so many pictures out there and even if we see your picture, we might decide to change it for us to accept it.

The pan-African movement was an important movement in the continent's recent history. The idea that Africans, not only in Africa but world-wide, would unite to wrest away the continent's fortunes from European imperialists or Cold War-era superpowers in order to usher in a new, united Africa that acts on its own accord and benefits from its own actions is a truly noble thing.

But in the post-Cold War period, with the Western powers now largely ignoring Africa, the pan-African movement seems to be losing its way. Anyone who does not believe this fact should pick up the May issue of the New African magazine, the long-standing, respected publication of the pan-Africanist movement, and they will be convinced. The issue amounts to nothing less than a full, unadulterated sponsorship of Robert Mugabe's failed regime in Zimbabwe and it includes at its zenith an interview, filled with loaded, softball questions, of Mugabe himself with the magazine's editor Baffour Ankomah. In addition to the interview, page after page of a 'sponsored supplement' (sponsored, of course, by Zimbabwe's Ministry of Information and Publicity) paints the country's main opposition leader Morgan Tsvangirai as a violent instigator who essentially earned the beating that he received in March at the hands of Mugabe's police force by being a puppet of the West. Other articles take great pains to show that Mugabe actually enjoys wide-ranging support among the people of Zimbabwe. It also blames the country's 2,200% inflation rate and 80% unemployment rate entirely on the ruthless sanctions put into place by the United Kingdom and the United States. The supplement ends with a laughable quote made by Mugabe during his address last month at a gathering that marked the twenty-seventh year of Zimbabwe's independence where he congratulates his citizens for refusing to be "re-colonized" and, in typical Mugabe fashion, continues on to rail against the British government.

There is no mention of the massive food shortages, and resulting starvation, that has occurred since Mugabe's disastrous land redistribution policy began seven years ago. The shortages, of course, are blamed on drought and sanctions. There is no mention of the countless electoral irregularities that have occurred in Zimbabwe. There is no mention of the brutal sweep that Mugabe's thugs made through Harare recently that amounted to the destruction of hundreds of thousands of homes and businesses of Zimbabwe's people. There is plenty of talk about the Southern African Development Community's recent summit in Tanzania that resulted in what amounts to a shocking endorsement of Mugabe and his regime's practices. There is also plenty of discussion about the secret backroom dealings of the US and British governments, ruthlessly trying to undermine Mugabe's poor, peaceful, government despite the fact that it only wants what is best for its citizens.

Let's concede that Zimbabwe's situation might in fact be more complicated than what is regularly presented in the Western press. Its current troubles may be caused by a number of issues, it is fine to recognize that fact and it is fine to try to present both sides of the story. But when a nation's "democratically" elected leader, who has been in power for twenty-seven years, presides over a government that has the highest inflation rate in the world, one of the highest unemployment rates in the world, and the lowest life-expectancy in the world and, at the same time, is facing extreme food shortages that will likely result in the death of large numbers of its population, regularly ignores the rulings of the judicial branch of its government, suppresses freedom of the media, is continuously accused of human rights abuses by a wide range of governments and nongovernmental organizations, has been accused of rigging elections by multiple sources, and openly beats and tortures political opponents, that, in a nutshell, is the definition of a failed state. How would it be possible for a leader of such a failed state to hold any popularity at all unless it was through deception and tyrannical means? It is simply impossible.

Now, even if it is conceded that Mugabe isn't entirely to blame for the situation in Zimbabwe (and that would be a lot to concede), even if we agree that the West has to share some of the blame, how could anybody or any media outlet advance the notion, in 2007, that Mugabe is a freedom fighting victim of Western imperialism? How could anyone say that Mugabe really just wants what is best for the people of Zimbabwe and that if it wasn't for Tony Blair and George W. Bush and the evil meddling of their governments this would be the golden age of Zimbabwe?

It is a sad indication of the status of the pan-Africanist movement today when one of its most important media outlets decides to accept such an obviously flawed and dangerous argument. It is ironic too that Mugabe's argument is, in the end, diametrically opposed to the well-being of Zimbabwe's people, African people, the very thing that the pan-Africanists should be fighting hardest to protect.

After more than 50 years of serving the community, Rockford Clinic in Gweru, in Zimbabwe's central province of Midlands, shut down two months ago when the last trained nurse quit - a symptom of the wider crisis facing rural health services.

"Many people, including a substantial number of people who now hold high positions in government, were born in and treated at Rockford Clinic, but the [health] ministry had to close it down after it went for a long time with only one qualified nurse and assistants picked from the nearby villages," said Amos Magenga, 65, who lived close to the clinic, about 90km southeast of Gweru.

The operational woes faced by the clinic are all too familiar in Zimbabwe: a shortage of nursing staff and drugs, dilapidated buildings and equipment, and even clean water in short supply - the inevitable result of a record inflation rate of 2,200 percent, and a crippling shortage of foreign exchange.

"These days it's virtually useless to seek help from these health centres, they can't even provide painkillers that one can easily obtain over the counter in a shop," Topona Mangwende, 60, told IRIN.

"Health delivery inevitably suffers when the economy deteriorates to the extent that we are seeing in this country," said Innocent Makwiramiti, an economist and past chief executive of the Zimbabwe National Chamber of Commerce. "The government is so preoccupied with finding solutions to the economic meltdown that social services like health are now almost forgotten."

According to the United Nations Population Fund, "Women and children continue to be particularly at risk as the situation continues to worsen. Maternal and neonatal mortality has spiked in recent years as access to basic health services and critical obstetric care has declined."

Rural communities are hardest hit because they are the least developed and poorest regions of the country, Makwiramiti said.

A consequence of the crisis is that traditional medicine is enjoying a resurgence among Zimbabweans unable to afford orthodox treatment. "Because of the poor state of clinics and hospitals we are being forced to adopt desperate measures to save our lives when we fall sick," said Mangwende.

When his stomach began to "mysteriously" swell a year ago, he turned to a traditional healer who claimed he had been bewitched and needed to have the evil spirits exorcised - a treatment option that failed.

Gordon Chavhunduka, president of the Zimbabwe National Traditional Healers Association, acknowledged the problem of fake healers, but said members of his association were playing a vital role in solving Zimbabwe's medical crisis. Around 80 percent of Zimbabweans are believed to use traditional medicine.

"More and more people in both rural and urban areas are turning to traditional healers because they cannot get much help from hospitals and clinics," Chavhunduka told IRIN. "We hold regular meetings and workshops with the people to educate them on the advantages of using traditional medicine, and what also makes us popular is that we are more affordable."

The country's political and economic crises, and one of the world's highest rates of HIV infection, has seen Zimbabwe tumble to a ranking of 151 out of 177 countries in the United Nation's Development Programme Human Development Index.

Speakers at a religious ceremony honouring President Thabo Mbeki in the Eastern Cape have called on him to stand for a third term as ANC president, SABC news reported.

Mbeki was attending a religious ceremony in his honour at his family home at Ngcingwane village near Dutywa.

The House of Traditional Leaders said the body based its support for Mbeki's third term on steps he had taken to address issues affecting them.

Mbeki read from the Bible, choosing a passage from Samuel, thanking God for protecting him thus far.

Among those present were the Queen Mother and members of the Royal Bafokeng tribe, several traditional leaders and members of the Eastern Cape cabinet.

Former ANC Women's League President Winnie Madikizela Mandela, who was a member of the Pondo Royal family, had also been invited but had not yet arrived, reported the SABC.

Zimbabwean victims seek help from other Africans

UNITED NATIONS (Reuters) - Opposition Zimbabweans, some victims of police torture, sought to convince other African nations on Wednesday that it was time to call for an end to the suppression in their country that has left a trail of broken bodies.

Lawyer Tawanda Mutasah, one of four Zimbabwean human rights campaigners, said African delegates at the United Nations had to be persuaded that Zimbabwe's actions need reprimands in the Security Council and the U.N. Human Rights Council.

"The United Nations has a responsibility to protect citizens who are suffering from state terror," Mutasah told a U.N. news conference, sponsored by philanthropist George Soros' Open Society Institute.

South Africa, among other nations, say President Robert Mugabe's brutal crackdown on his critics, is an African problem and does not endanger international peace and security.

Otto Saki, acting director of the Zimbabwe Lawyers for Human Rights, noted that criticism of Mugabe's policy had been voiced by leaders in Senegal, Zambia, Tanzania, and Botswana, which refuted the charge by Mugabe's government that only the United States and former colonial power Britain had protested.

Grace Kwinjeh, an official in Zimbabwe's opposition Movement for Democratic Change, led by Morgan Tsvangirai, whose repeated beatings provoked an international outcry, said a police raid on a March 11 prayer meeting changed many lives.

Like Tsvangirai, Kwinjeh was beaten and taken to several police stations after she went to a prison to visit arrested colleagues.

"None of us had prepared for the kind of brutality that was unleashed on us that morning," she said. "On one occasion I was beaten with an iron bar on my head which resulted in part of my ear coming off."

After the first beatings, Kwinjeh said that she and other prisoners were shoved into a police van, with open wounds, bleeding. "Like animals there in the lorry they made us all lie down on top of each other in this lorry."

At the Harare central police station, she said she was ordered to lie in a courtyard for several hours, dizzy and vomiting and refused any water. "We were told to get up and hold the person in front of you by the belt" and transported to a different police station, Kwinjeh said.

Among those with her was Sekai Holland, 64, who police called a "whore" for British Prime Minister Tony Blair. She suffered three broken ribs, a crushed knee and broken arms.

Hours and days went by, Kwinjeh said, including hospital care and with guns trained on her. Her lawyers obtained a release because no charges had been filed.

When she and Holland tried to board an air ambulance to South Africa, they were arrested again before they could finally leave the country. She has been treated in South Africa for five weeks.

"But we are the true lucky ones who left the country," said Kwinjeh, who wore a black turban. She said some 28 colleagues were "rearrested, tortured, abducted from hospital and as we speak they are still in prison."

President Thabo Mbeki's having written letters to both Zimbabwe's ruling Zanu-PF and the opposition Movement for Democratic Change was welcome news, the Democratic Alliance said on Saturday.

"Failure to do so (writing to both) would have suggested a partiality which is inappropriate in the person requested to mediate between the two sides," the party's Douglas Gibson said.

He said the people of Zimbabwe and the whole of the region was looking to Mbeki to achieve a breakthrough. The DA would back Mbeki's efforts.

"Firstly, in order to make a success of the policy that government has embarked upon, President Mbeki must first admit that Zanu-PF has become a dictatorship. Any one president who stays in power for 27 years is a dictator. Secondly, South Africa must insist that President Mugabe does not run in the 2008 elections."

Towards a negotiated settlement

In Zimbabwe:

A position paper prepared by the Peoples' Policy Committee (PPC) to His Excellency the President of the Republic of South Africa in his capacity as the mediator to the crises in Zimbabwe

1. Introduction

Following the SADC extraordinary summit held in Tanzania on 28 March 2007, the People's Policy Committee (PPC) which is a network of Zimbabweans based in the UK, would like to put forward its preferred position as regards the proposed 'SADC Initiative'. We begin with a tacit acceptance that Zimbabwe's crisis is an African problem requiring an African solution. The time has come for new, concrete proposals, promoted by African leaders and implemented by Zimbabweans from all political and ideological hues, to restore hope to Zimbabwe. On that note, PPC welcomes SADC's decision to appoint President Thabo Mbeki as the mediator to the actors in the protracted social conflict in Zimbabwe. It is hoped that his mediation shall tame the hydra of violence currently sweeping across the country and also usher in a new democratic dispensation. This position paper is premised on the assumption that His Excellency President Thabo Mbeki of South Africa is willing to consider submissions from voices other than those stakeholders so far invited to attend the consultative meetings in South Africa. Given the extraordinary and grave conditions now obtaining in Zimbabwe and the significant population of Zimbabwean exiles living here in the UK some of whom are members of our pressure group on whose behalf we are acting, it would be remiss of us not to make appropriate representations to the SADC-initiated process. The major issues and expected minimum outcomes from the process are largely a common cause. Accordingly, we restrict our inputs to those matters the further resolution of which will, in our assessment and in light of our country's chequered history, help create and deliver more enduring value, peace and national integration to all the people of Zimbabwe. In this context we would therefore have to address such issues as the aim of the negotiations, the creation of an enabling environment for genuine negotiations, the nature of the mechanisms for negotiation and therefore the question who would sit at the negotiating table, the cessation of human rights abuses, the possibility of the formation of a transitional government, the duration of the negotiations and the role of the international community in the negotiated resolution of the crises in Zimbabwe.

2. Multilateral negotiations

The People's Policy Committee (PPC) would like to submit to the mediator that the problem of Zimbabwe is so huge such that inter-party dialogue would be a limited an approach to it. It is hereby proposed that if any negotiations are to take place to end the hostilities and build durable peace and democracy in Zimbabwe, then those negotiations including the pre-negotiation agenda-setting phase should be all inclusive. It is the view of PPC that the mediator should extend the consultative informal talks to the members of the civil society, church, professional bodies and any other stakeholders who are keen to make such positive interventions in Zimbabwe. The perception that only the Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) factions and the ruling Zimbabwe African National Union (ZANU PF) party legitimately represent the aspirations of the people of Zimbabwe and should therefore be engaged on the negotiations is incorrect. A case exists for an all-inclusive process comparable to that which ushered independence and democracy to South Africa in 1994. In the context of Zimbabwe, this would bring together the coalition of democratic forces currently operating under the Save Zimbabwe Campaign in addition to the ruling party and external observers from UN, AU and SADC. If the press reports emanating from Pretoria are anything to go by, PPC would unequivocally and unreservedly endorse the mediator's stance on insisting on a broad-based crisis resolution approach.

3. Enabling Conditions for Negotiations

In consonant with other stakeholders, PPC strongly affirms the position that formal talks should only take place after the government has repealed some repressive pieces of legislation such as the Public Order and Security Act (POSA), Access to Information and Protection of Privacy Act (AIPPA) as well as the Broadcasting Services Act (BSA).On that note, the government should drop charges and release a legion of activists who are illegally being held in police cells on charges based on these unconstitutional laws. It is also the submission of PPC that the constitutional amendments that have been proposed by the ruling party should give way to the wholesale constitutional reform as enunciated in section 4 of this position paper. In furtherance of this constitutional condition, PPC would like to join many other voices including the 'Save Zimbabwe Campaign' in calling for the new constitution before the next presidential and parliamentary elections. As a matter of urgency the state should renounce violence on its citizens, stop abductions of activists and opposition members as well as refrain police brutality against innocent citizens. It is the considered view of the PPC that the EU should not lift the targeted sanctions on the ruling elite until the formal negotiations are underway and the government has demonstrated fully its commitment to allow a democratic transition process to take place in the country. PPC would also like to challenge the international community to enable all the actors, large and small with resources for them to participate fully at levels of the crisis resolution process.

4. A New Democratic Constitution

The position of the PPC is that the genealogy of the current problems in Zimbabwe is traceable to the National Constitution. Any diagnosis and prescription to the crisis which preclude the constitution is flawed and therefore irrelevant. The Lancaster House constitution was not cast on stone. Indeed it had been the expectation that in time, a new home grown supreme law of the land would be enacted by the people of Zimbabwe themselves in order to satisfy their local needs and realize their national aspirations. This is not the same thing as the piecemeal re-branding of the same document undertaken by the incumbent government over the years to satisfy its narrow partisan interests of keeping power at all costs. That there are serious limitations and flaws in the current Lancaster House Constitution and that these have given rise to issues of governance is widely accepted. More compelling however is the fact that this constitution has resulted in a highly centralised unitary system of government which we submit is unsuitable for a future democratic Zimbabwe. That the incumbent government has manipulated the constitution to entrench itself and the interests of its constituents is accepted but this is only a symptom of a problem arising from use of an inappropriate constitutional model coupled with individual greed and propensity for excesses. Re-branding of the existing constitution in the hope that a new government emerging from next year's elections would act in good faith and achieve enduring national integration is too large a risk to take now bearing in mind the genocide and trauma suffered by minority ethnic groups particularly the Ndebele in south western Zimbabwe from 1982 1987, the so called 'Operation Clean Up' which left 700 000 people homeless and the so called Chimurenga 3 which crushed the agriculture sector. It is for these reasons that PPC advocates for the mediator to help the various actors in Zimbabwe to constitute an 'All Stakeholders Convention' (ASC) to work out a new constitutional framework that shall usher in a new democratic order in the country. Participatory constitution making is today a fact of constitutional life as well as a good in itself. A democratic constitution-making process is critical to the strength, acceptability, and legitimacy of the new era in Zimbabwe.Inorder to avoid the recurrence of the current problems in the future PPC strongly advocates for a people driven constitution which shall take into account the histories, cultures, grievances and aspirations of all its citizens. In our view, it is only through effective decentralization of authority to autonomous regions/provinces in so doing creating self-perpetuating institutions such as those that would emerge under our recommended union constitutional blueprint, would human rights and equality of all Zimbabweans be adequately protected and entrenched. Experience in new democracies and old, demonstrates that if human rights are not adequately protected initially, it will be difficult to do so later.

We further recommend that the president's term of office be limited to a maximum of two five year terms

Ministers appointed under the new constitution should be subject to confirmation by parliament both at central and provincial governments' level.

The judiciary must be an independent branch of government and not be under the Ministry of Justice. The judiciary should control its financial and administrative affairs free from executive involvement, though necessarily subject to parliament's ultimate control over the budget.

The agreed constitution should be subjected to approval by the people through a referendum supervised by SADC and the African Union and observed by the international community.

The agreed constitution should be subject to review by an expert commission at ten year intervals.

The new Constitution must provide representative, accountable and multiparty government; respect for the rule of law; and the promotion of the fundamental human rights of all Zimbabweans.

5. Transitional Processes

PPC would like to propose the following sequence as a roadmap towards the resolution of the crises in Zimbabwe:

Prenegotiation Phase: - The mediator to consult the actors across the spectrum in order to set the agenda for the formal negotiations. These consultations can take the form of secret talks as already been happening but they should as a matter of principle be open to all stakeholder in Zimbabwe. The Prenegotiations are viewed by PPC as meant for bridging the chasm that lie across the various actors; the outcome of these meetings should be made known to the public at the appropriate time.

All Stakeholders Convention (ASC):- An All Stakeholders Convention composed of civil society, political parties, media , faith-based organisations, women , youths and student movements as well as all sectors of society that are willing to contribute to this process should be constituted. The ASC should be organised into working groups so as to deal conclusively with all the critical issues in the crisis. PPC would like to propose the following working groups; (a) constitutional reform (b) land reform (c) electoral reform (d) truth recovery (e) economic recovery. The working groups would report to ASC for debate and approval The talks should lead to a power-sharing agreement on a transitional government, including opposition and civil society in key government posts, a new constitution, demilitarisation of state institutions, a new voters roll, a program of administrative and legislative reform guaranteeing genuinely free and fair elections on an agreed schedule and emergency economic recovery measures that could lead to full resumption of external financial support after elections. The stakeholders should agree on the composition and establishment of an interim authority to oversee the country's transition to democracy.

Dissolution of Parliament: - Incumbent president's departure from office when his term expires in March 2008 followed by the takeover by an interim government. An interim government would take responsibility for the basic administrative functions of the state until a new government is elected later in the process. Constitutional amendments such as are required to facilitate the creation of an interim government should be passed by the current parliament in the spirit of the SADC-led Initiative. As the process of normalising the constitutional and political situation develops, the international community should withdraw the targeted sanctions and other restrictions applying to the Zimbabwean government and initiate steps to assist in restoring democratic order and economic recovery in Zimbabwe.

Interim Government: - The All Stakeholders Convention should establish a transitional government, which should include the members of the opposition, civil society and the ruling party and provide for a rotating transitional presidency.

The mandate of the Interim government should include the following among others:

q              organisation of a referendum for a new constitution and drawing up of a new voters roll; and

q              Implementation of the transitional articles of the new constitution

q              Professionalisation of security and uniformed forces

q              Repatriation of Zimbabwean community in the diaspora

The international community should be available to provide assistance to this process when required by the Zimbabwean negotiators. PPC would recommend that the African Union Force be deployed to give protection to the Interim Government.

Elections:- Following the ratification of the new Constitution, preparations should begin for new elections to be held no later than the end of 2008.The elections should be held under a new democratic constitution. The new constitution should provide for an Independent Delimitation Commission, 'Independent Electoral Commission', Media and Information Commission as well as the Security and Defense Commission all of which should be constituted in time to run both the Referendum and the Presidential/parliamentary elections. These elections should be based on the SADC principles and standards of holding democratic, free and fair elections. In that regard, the current electoral laws should be amended to meet the SADC principles and standards. The electoral reforms should also provide for the diasporans vote. An estimated 4 million Zimbabwean adults now live in exile outside Zimbabwe and have been disenfranchised by the incumbent government. PPC recommends that suitable arrangements be made to restore in full the voting rights of this community in time for the referendum as well as the parliamentary and presidential elections. International observers should be present to monitor the elections, to oversee the transition from the interim government to the new elected government, and to ensure that the elections are free and fair.

6. Truth recovery process

PPC would like to put it forward to the mediator that, for the purposes of building sustainable democracy in a failed state such as Zimbabwe, there is a need for a truth recovery process. While accepting the genuine doubts and fears around the issue of 'Truth', it is clear that many victims and survivors of the crises in Zimbabwe believe that some formal collective examination and acknowledgement of the past is necessary for them to find closure. The idea of truth recovery processes is based on the concept of 'transition', from crisis to peace or from one government to another. At its most basic, a truth process is meant to mark the end of one difficult era and the beginning of a new and better one. It is completely unacceptable, disrespectful and insensitive for any political leader to arrogate or appropriate to himself/herself the right to grant pardon to individuals that sponsored and committed human rights atrocities and state sponsored terrorism since independence in 1980. With or without a Truth and Reconciliation Commission, only the people of Zimbabwe can determine whether or not to take legal action against those who committed crimes against humanity and genocide against defenseless citizens. We would caution that this is a highly delicate matter which if not handled sensibly, could trigger conflict and war in future. The political leadership should honestly and publicly acknowledge responsibility for past political violence due to their acts of omission and commission. This would be seen as the first and necessary step having the potentiality of a larger process of truth recovery. When acknowledgement is forthcoming, we recommend that measured, inclusive and in-depth consideration be given to establishing an appropriate and unique truth recovery process. For this to develop, a team with local and international expertise should be established using a fair and transparent method to explore the specific feasibility of such a process.

The specific purpose of a truth recovery process:

Promote reconciliation, peace and healing; and to reduce tensions resulting from past violence;

Clarify and acknowledge as much unresolved truth about the past as possible;
Respond to the needs and interests of victims;

Contribute to justice in a broad sense, ensure accountability and responsibility for past actions from organisations and institutions, as well as potentially from individuals;

Identify the responsibilities of the State, of military and police, and of other institutions and organisations for the violence of the past; and to make recommendations for change that will reduce the likelihood of future conflict.

The truth recovery process can take the form any of the following:

Historical Clarification Commission

Truth and Reconciliation Commission

7. Reconstruction

The new government would face the daunting challenge of entrenching democracy and peace, rebuilding the battered economy and resuscitating collapsed social services. The negotiations should thus, come up with an economic recovery framework. The economic reconstruction is crucial to restoring order and providing social security for the generality of the population. Without it, the negotiated settlement will be meaningless to the general public. PPC would like to recommend the implementation of an emergency economic recovery plan to curb inflation, restore donor and foreign investor confidence and boost mining and agricultural production, including establishment of a Land Commission with a strong technocratic base and wide representation of Zimbabwean stakeholders to recommend policies aimed at ending the land crisis. To this end PPC would like the negotiators to engage with the Brettonwoods institutions at various levels of the negotiation process inorder to build the confidence for their engagement in the reconstruction phase of this conflict resolution process.

10. Conclusion

In lieu of conclusion, PPC would like to ask the mediator to invest in its belief because it is made in good faith for the benefit of present and future generations of Zimbabwe. We further recommend that you take into account views from a broad cross section of Zimbabweans both individuals and groups. We highly value and appreciate the leading role that the SADC and the South African government are playing in trying to reach a negotiated settlement in Zimbabwe, and hope that this will continue under the form of an All Stakeholders Convention (ASC) to establish a constitutional order. Should the government of Zimbabwe maintain its strategy of terror, human rights abuses, violation of democratic principles, and their disrespect of the rule of law by violently repressing popular pressure for a democratic constitution, free and fair elections, we challenge the SADC, AU, and all other international institutions to completely isolate it. When all is said and done, we recognise that history does not offer a nation many such moments as one that our beloved Zimbabwe now has to rediscover its identity and sovereignty by among other things writing a new people driven constitution.

ZESA fired a worker for writing a letter to a newspaper seeking the return of his former boss, but yesterday the Labour Court told Zesa to reinstate him, saying his rights to express opinions had been violated.

Yesterday, the court ordered Zesa to reinstate Mr Mufaro Stig Hove without any loss of pay or benefits after it held that Mr Hove's dismissal was improper, since he had a right to express his views.

If Zesa's code of conduct prevented employees from criticising Zesa, then this would be a violation of constitutional rights.

Mr Hove was fired after writing a letter published in the Financial Gazette, appealing to former Zesa chief executive, Mr Simbarashe Mangwengwende to come to the rescue of the workers.

In the judgment, the court found that Mr Hove had the right to express his opinions.

Zesa Holdings had dismissed him arguing that his letter had put its name into disrepute and had the likelihood of causing financial prejudice.

The court, however, found that though it was common cause that Mr Hove had written the letter, Zesa Holdings had failed to prove to the court how exactly the letter had put the company's name into disrepute.

"The appellant had a right to express his opinion under the circumstances. It is, however, not clear to this court how exactly the article put the respondent's name into disrepute.

It was also the court's finding that if the Zesa code of conduct prohibited such expression of opinions, then it violated the employees' constitutional rights.

"If writing to the Press is a prohibited conduct, then such a prohibition is in my view, a violation appellant's constitutional rights."

The court said if it was no longer possible for Zesa Holdings to reinstate Mr Hove, then both should agree on a suitable amount to damages to be awarded.

In the course of our revolutionary struggle to liberate our country from oppression, imperialism and exploitation, our counterparts and allies have often asked us: What does your movement stand for? What is your programme? What is your ideology Are you a Socialist movement/Pan-Africanist? How is your movement structured? And many other things.

It is to supply some of the answers to these questions that this manifesto was written. The answers are far from complete.

It will only be when we lay aside our camourflash for our pens that the World will know true nature of our revolution and philosophy. Here we have merely provided a preliminary definition of what we conceive to be the Zimbabwe betrayed revolution.

Some people will find flaws in our programme and ideology. We do not apologise for such mistakes. For in a difficult struggle as one we are waging mistakes are bound to occur.

We strongly feel that the publication of this manifesto is imperative and that the material contained therein will provide our supporters and sympathisers with enough useful data to see the direction of the Zimbabwe revolution.

FZY and ZYM moved away from this policy. In the words of our Nationalist hero Cde Dr Ndabaningi Sithole:" We have turned away from reformist politics. We now enter the era of take-over politics". " We are our own liberators by direct confrontation"

In launching what we now call "Betrayed Chimurenga" (the unfinished war of liberation) FZY and ZYM is continuing the struggle against oppression, colonialism, and imperialism started by our forefathers in 1896 and 1962.

A new dimension is added to this struggle by the demand for minority independence from the Capitalist rule of Zanu PF and from other neo-liberal systems.

We clearly define the question as under a tyranny, the seizure of majority rule by the Zanu PF regime a former nationalist movement that has betrayed the revolution and have adopted colonialists and imperialist's doctrine of oppression.

A bourgeois nationalist movement that has replaced Rhodesians white bosses by black bosses or white by black privileged classes creating a class struggle.

With the Ideological guidance of our fallen true nationalist heroes Cde Josiah Magamba Tongogara, Cde Joshua Nqabuko Nkomo, Cde Ndabaningi Sithole and Cde Edgar Tekere we have to complete the revolutionary struggle which has been hijacked by Zanu PF bosses. It means that:

(a) Where political power which was in the hands of a foreign minority now black minority, surely it will be wrested from them and placed in the hands of the indigenous African majority;

b) Where today a minority and neo-liberal systems enjoys economic and financial privileges, these will be abrogated and rights of the indigenous people to all natural resources and economic and financial betterment restored to them; and,

(c) Where exploitation and degeneration exist today, there should be real equality, freedom and social justice we repeat social justice.

The movement and the unity of the people

The movement is the vanguard of the revolution. It is the machinery through which the revolution has to be planned, waged and prosecuted and finally consolidated.

The movement must unite all the young Africans in a common struggle against a common enemy-the tyranny. All the African people of Zimbabwe must unite in the common struggle, irrespective of ideological, religious or regional differences.

The unity of the people is absolutely necessary for the successful prosecution of "betrayed Chimurenga" and the full cooperation of Comrades.

Those scapegoats serving the interests of the minority regime of Zanu PF either directly or indirectly must be persuaded to see the true nature of the betrayed Revolution.

The Movement must involve all the oppressed people of Zimbabwe, not only in the common purpose of fighting against oppressive rule and dictatorship, but also in the detailed preparation for a new order (fighting a system).

In the context of World struggle the Movement will join forces with all progressive movements, being Pan-Africanist, Socialist who are ideologically clear in the fight against class supremacy and put power in the hands of the masses of the working class.

Aims and Objectives

We are devoted to the interests of all young Africans and dedicated to the Revolutionary cause of the working class of our country and the globe.

We are committed to and struggle for transformation of Zimbabwe from a Capitalist society to a Socialist society in which there will no exploitation of Africans by another in their motherland.

-To create a free, democratic, independent and socialist Zimbabwe and remove the political domination of the tyranny Zanu PF regime.

-To transform young Africans into cadres to create a Socialist globe.

-To strive to eliminate class struggle, oppression and exploitation.

-To maintain and enforce a clear revolutionary outlook of the struggle.

-To strongly advocate and eliminate private ownership of natural resources (land, minerals) and empower landless peasants, working class.

-Challenge Zanu PF's sell-out of land reform and bourgeois Agrarian reform given to the Zanu PF bosses.

-Reignite the Continental revolution, by disintegrating the neo-colonial, Neo-liberal borders by mobilising the African indigenous on a broader United African Patriotic Front. In the fight for Economic and Political emancipation.

The continuing arrests, kidnapping and torture of opposition MDC supporters by the evil Mugabe regime is clear testimony to the fact that Ian Smith's settler regime was a far better dictator than Robert Mugabe's. Indeed, the Smith regime did arrest and detain thousands of Zimbabweans merely for resisting colonialism and settlerism. They beat up detained prisoners at times, but they still gave them food and medicines.
Some of the prisoners then were even able to read books and to study for all kinds of educational qualifications, including degrees. That is a far cry from the manner in which the diabolical Mugabe regime is treating innocent people, who are being illegally arrested, abducted, detained and tortured today. Reports that as many as 600 MDC activists have so far been arrested, kidnapped and tortured this year alone attest to the satanic nature of the Mugabe regime.
After 27 years in power, Mugabe has become a monster, who takes pleasure in inflicting pain on innocent victims of his own fear. In the face of the 2008 parliamentary and presidential elections, in which he is going to be a candidate, Mugabe has unleashed a reign of terror against both his opponents within Zanu (PF) and those in the MDC.
Unlike Ian Smith, who never used to bomb or kill his own kind, Mugabe has arrested, detained, beaten up and even killed some of the members of his own party in order to lay the blame on the MDC.
He has bombed at least one train, a police station and other state infrastructure in a vain attempt to demonstrate that the MDC has embarked on an orgy of violence. Fortunately for those of us who are innocent, the general public, the SADC community and the international players see right through the dictator's evil machinations; they know the truth.
In light of the activities of the past few weeks perpetrated by the despotic Mugabe regime, it is necessary for civic organisations and opposition political parties to carefully identify the specific members of the ZRP, the army, the CIO and the Green Bombers that are involved in these ugly and evil activities. Proper records need to be kept for purposes of prosecuting these individuals in a free Zimbabwe tomorrow.
Indeed, some of the names and other details of the victims of these demons are currently being published in this paper, but we also need to name and shame their torturers as far as possible. The people currently engaged in violation of people's rights must be made aware of what may befall them should Zimbabwe set itself free from the clutches of the dictator. A day is coming when justice will be visited upon some of these people in a manner they will not appreciate. Mugabe will not rule this nation forever.
The evils that the desperate Mugabe regime is committing make the evil activities of the Smith regime look like a badly organised picnic. It is not an exaggeration to say the Mugabe regime has perfected torture into an art form. The regime has become an expert in the infliction of pain and suffering both physically and mentally.
The stories relating to how some of the MDC supporters were tortured and harassed by state agents indicate that the agents involved must have been trained in some of the most diabolical method of physically and mentally hurting innocent people.
Ian Smith may have done some beating and torture of his victims as well, but Mugabe exceeds him by thousands of miles. What remains to be seen is whether a new and democratic Zimbabwe government will allow the perpetrators of these evil deeds go free, or ensure that the law take its course. I am of the latter option, of course.

ZIM SITUATION VERY PATHETIC........"IF ONLY!.....!"

Some years ago I met a Ugandan who was driving an illegal taxi in Manchester (UK). We got chatting about African politics and Uganda as he drove me home, and he suddenly said something that has stuck with me over the years. He said that "It was wrong of the whites to leave so early, we weren't ready".

When I asked what he meant, he said that there should have been "a longer run up to independence in Uganda, with more skilled Africans trained into the Judiciary, Civil Service, Police and Military". He went on to expand on this, he was obviously keen to get things off his chest, and said that "The interim government should have been five years or more, with the first two elections, supervised whilst still under British overall control, to ensure the rules were stuck to".

He then added "But most of all, the police should have remained under British control, and we should have been told we didn't need an army as the British Army was staying to "protect" Uganda, not that we needed an army, or protecting from any one except our own army".

I forget which "African strong man" was in charge of Uganda at the time, it could have been Idi Amin, or Milton Obotoe, or one of the others, but his charge was that they had all squandered and stolen the resources that had been there upon independence, and let down the hopes of a nation.

His basic argument was that with no native military, and the police supervised by the UK, democracy would have stuck from the start, and the constitution obeyed by all parties. And, that by not wasting money on unneeded Armies; money would have been spent on education, medicine and infrastructure.

In reality this wasn't practicable, especially given the "anti-colonial" sentiments in both Africa and the West at the time. But when you look at the mess that the vast majority of African nations got into after independence, maybe he had a point for all of the new states and not just Uganda.

I haven't thought about this conversation for some years, and I am afraid that like many I have just written the whole continent off as a "basket case", with Zimbabwe just being the latest example, but I wonder how it would have all turned out "if only.." Britain and France had come up with a joint "plan" for correcting inappropriate borders (those that split tribes), and insisting on acting as military guarantors of the constitution for each newly independent state?

It's too late now, and asking for any white military force to go in and correct an abhorrent African regime is just whistling into the wind. There is still an "Anti colonial" lobby on the left wing of the UK, who would bring down the New Labour regime if Blair tried to use military force, so even if he has thought about it, he has not dared risked it.

I am afraid that you are stuck with the 'old boys club' aka the "African Union" or the "UN", aka the 'Chinese oil exploration authority', for any hope in Zimbabwe. In reality this means that nothing will happen, and until and unless South Africa feels threatened, nothing will be allowed to happen. With the news that Mugabe intends to run for election until he dies, that is the only hope you have, that he dies of old age.

It will be a very long time, if ever, before Zimbabwe fully recovers from the damage. All the farm infrastructure has been destroyed, the farmers dispersed, and capital goods (tractors etc) gone, and livestock diseased or eaten. Even just repairing the fences will cost millions.

Your country has effectively been destroyed, and will never regain the chances lost, because even if Mugabe's regime collapses, all the squatters, veterans, activists etc will still be there, and no one will be able to control them. It would need a military government just to protect people let alone enforce the courts orders.

I am sorry to be pessimistic, but I suspect that when Mugabe's party lose power, they will revert back to guerrilla violence to get it back, and this brings us back to "if only ."

The rigging of the Zimbabwean Elections (2000 to 2007)

Preamble:

I think the fact that the Zim Elections were being systematically rigged from the year 2000 to date is one that has either to be accepted or contested.

It can never the duty of a single individual to relate how the Elections were (and are) rigged in Zimbabwe.

Then there are also the following questions:

What difference does it make if we get thousands of witnesses giving their testimonies?

Will Mr Robert Mugabe then resign?

Will it change the manner in which Mr Thabo Mbeki handles the Zim crisis?

Why are Elections Rigged?

Elections are rigged because it is believed that if they are done in a completely "free and fair" manner, a certain "undesirable' resilt will arise.

They are also rigged because the "undesirable" contestants command a clearly greater support than the Establishment are "comfortable" with.

Elections are therefore rigged because the Establishment is under certain pressures. They have to hold Elections to gain credibility but on the other hand they would be "out of power" if they did not engage in various nefarious activities to suppress the true will of the people!

Violet Gonda: My guest on the programme Hot Seat today is Grace Kwinjeh the Deputy Secretary for International Relations in the Tsvangirai MDC. She was among the group of opposition leaders who were arrested and tortured while in police custody four weeks ago and she's currently in South Africa for medical treatment. Welcome on the programme Grace.

Grace Kwinjeh: Thank-you.

Violet: Now Grace, before we start I just wanted to play for you and also for our listeners an interview that I did with Kembo Mohadi, Monday evening. I asked him to comment about the attacks that are taking place in Zimbabwe right now and this is what happened.

Kembo Mohadi: Hello

Violet: Hello, Minister Mohadi?

Minister Kembo Mohadi: Yes

Violet: Hello Minister, my name is Violet; I'm calling from SW Radio Africa

Minister Kembo Mohadi: Where?

Violet: From SW Radio Africa

Minister Kembo Mohadi: What can I do for you Madam?

Violet: Minster I wanted to find out from you or to get a comment from you about the allegations from the MDC that a lot of their activists are getting arrested and tortured in custody. And, as the Home Affairs Minister, I wanted to find out or to get your comment on this.

Minister Kembo Mohadi: No we don't arrest anybody and torture people here in Zimbabwe . We arrest criminals and even if they are terrorist criminals we don't torture them. The law takes its own course, if someone has got a case to answer he goes to Court and he is convicted. Those allegations are false.

Violet: But Minister Mohadi these MDC leaders and activists have actually appeared in Court covered in blood. So how can you explain this?

Minister Kembo Mohadi: Ah no, when was that?

Violet: How can you explain this?

Minister Kembo Mohadi: When was that? When was that? When did they appear in Court covered in blood? That is a wrong statement. When was it?

Violet: The MDC

Minister Kembo Mohadi: did you see them covered in blood?

Violet: Morgan Tsvangirai

Minister Kembo Mohadi: Did you see them covered in blood?

Minister Kembo Mohadi: Ah no

Violet: He was seen on TV

Minister Kembo Mohadi: He was not even covered in blood. That's a lie. You come to Zimbabwe and witness this for yourself and don't be talking about things that you don't know. And we don't ban people from coming to Zimbabwe . Why do you have to listen to CNN and Sky News and BBC? Come to Zimbabwe and see for yourself and report correctly.

Violet: But Minister Mohadi you know that.

Violet: Hello? Hello? And we lost connection with the Home Affairs Minister Kembo Mohadi, but I called him back and this is what happened.

Violet: Minister we must have got cut off?

Minister Kembo Mohadi: Yes, I said come to Zimbabwe and report correctly man! We are bombed by the MDC, they are involved in terrorist activities and you don't report about that! We've got a lot of them in custody, we've got a lot of them that are going on trial and have been remanded by our Courts. And they are possessing arms of war and you don't report about that. I say come to Zimbabwe and see for yourself man! We don't ban you from coming. You come to Zimbabwe you can see it for yourself other than to report from hearsay. I don't want to be talking to people that get these things from hearsay.

Violet: But that's why I'm talking to you direct so that we can hear it from you

Minister Kembo Mohadi: No, no, no, you are talking to me directly over the phone. Come to Zimbabwe and report correctly!

Violet: But you know that SW Radio Africa is banned in Zimbabwe ?

Minister Kembo Mohadi: What ban? You come to me, I'm the Minister of Home Affairs and say you want to come and report then you, you you will cover the story that you want, other than talking. I don't want to be talking to you about rumours please; please can you please leave it alone

Violet: But that's why I'm talking to you

Minister Kembo Mohadi: No, no, no, can you please leave me alone. There's nothing like that. I've told you that everything is false so what else do you want?

Violet: You have said that journalists can come to Zimbabwe , but how many journalists have been arrested?

Kembo Mohadi: Yeah why don't you come to Zimbabwe if you, you know who has been arrested?

Violet: Wasn't there a journalist Gift Phiri, an independent journalist who was arrested last week?

Kembo Mohadi: Who is that? Who has been arrested?

Violet: Gift Phiri is a journalist that's actually at the Avenues Clinic right now

Kembo Mohadi: Ya but you come to Zimbabwe

Violet: Receiving treatment after he was brutalised by the police

Kembo Mohadi: No you've got to, if you come to Zimbabwe you've got to register, you've got to report that you are a journalist, you are accredited. Don't just come and report when you are not accredited. Whether you are a freelance or what you get accredited man. We are a sovereign country here. You can't just come and do things as if you are on a picnic.

Violet: So are you saying?

Minis ter Kembo Mohadi: We must know what; we must know that you are in Zimbabwe and that you are reporting for that and that paper.

Violet: Minister Mohadi: there are several journalists who

Minister Kembo Mohadi: Rumour spreader, why do you, why, why .

Violet: There are several journalists who have been assaulted

Minister Kembo Mohadi: Now there is no journalist that is in jail here in Zimbabwe, can you come tomorrow, fly tomorrow and then phone me, phone me on Wednesday because tomorrow I'm in Cabinet and fly in and come and identify a journalist that is in prison here or that is

Violet: Gift Phiri is one journalist

Minister Kembo Mohadi: Ya you come and show me. There is no one of that sort, that is

Violet: He was released just a few days ago

Minister Kembo Mohadi: No, no, that's not true, that's not true, that's not true. That's not true.

Violet: So what is the truth?

Minster Kembo Mohadi: No, there is nothing. I'm saying that's all false, we don't...

Violet: What about Edward Chikomba the ZBC cameraman who was murdered last week?

Minister Kembo Mohadi: He was murdered by who? Was he murdered by the police?

Violet: But is your government investigating to find out who

Minister Kembo Mohadi: Was he murdered by the police?

Violet : He was abducted in the same way that several opposition activists have been abducted

Minister Kembo Mohadi : Was he Abducted by who? By who?

Violet: By members of the state security agency

Minister Kembo Mohadi: Abducted by who? Who? Oh no, can you tell me that? Can you come and

Violet: So is your government going to investigate to find

Minister Kembo Mohadi: No come and look, ah please can you, if you don't want to talk to me stop giving me false accusations, ah please OK?

Violet: Minister do you understand that

Minister Kembo Mohadi: No, no, no I don't want to talk to you

Violet: Minister do you understand that Zimbabweans are frustrated with their daily struggles right now?

Minister Kembo Mohadi: Hey! Hey Hey Hey! Shut up!

Violet: But as a Minister, how can you even say that?

Violet: And the Minister hung up again for the second time and when I tried to call him for the third time he would not pick up his phone. Now Grace, can you comment on this?

Grace Kwinjeh: I think it's such a tragedy for our country to have politicians of such a calibre. Politicians who do not think they have to be made accountable for their actions. Politicians who take journalists or the media for granted, who take the listeners of SW Radio Africa for granted. I think it's really sad but that is part of the whole problem we have in Zimbabwe now, of a ZANU PF leadership that does not think that it has to account to anybody; its own people, the region, or the broader international community. So everything they do is with impunity.

Violet: Right, now before we go to your experience or what happened to you, Minister Kembo Mohadi said that there are no journalists that are currently in detention and I gave him an example of Gift Phiri who was detained last week and he was tortured and he actually received treatment in a hospital in Harare . And then, is it not a fact that there is another journalist, Luke Tamborinyoka who is now the MDC's Media and Information Officer who is currently in detention right now?

Grace Kwinjeh: Yes, apart from Luke I can tell you that when we were arrested on the 11 th March we had two journalists with us. We had you know the photo journalist Tsvangirai Mukwazhi and another Reuters journalist who were tortured for the specific reason that they were journalists. There was nothing else, their torturers identified them as journalists who were taking pictures, who were reporting, and tortured them for that. So the brutal assaults on them, which I saw, which I witnessed, are something that you know I think it's laughable for the Home Affairs Minister to deny that exists. We know journalists are being hunted, haunted in Zimbabwe . We know that they are being tortured and we know that they are being killed.

Violet: And then also coming to Opposition officials and activists who are being arrested and tortured right now. Now you are one of them, one of the Opposition officials that was arrested just recently. Can you tell us what happened to you after you were arrested because the Minister denies that Opposition officials and activists were tortured in custody?

Grace Kwinjeh: We were tortured at Machipisa police station in the fence outside the cells for about four hours by different members of the State Agents. There were CIO's, there were officials from the Army, there were Riot Police and War Veterans. They all took turns to do whatever they could do to us, from beating us up with baton sticks to punches, to being danced on. Mrs Sekai Holland for instance had one official, a woman War Veteran, dance on her and call her 'whore' and all sorts of things. So it cannot be denied that we went through such a horrific experience in the hands of State Agents at Highfields Police Station. And, after that, I was also tortured in the cells and there are witnesses to this in full view of police officials by army officials. That was on the morning of the 12 th of March. And, the Officer who was in charge there at Braeside Police Station, his name is Makore. So again, that's something real that happened and there are witnesses. And, apart from the witnesses, we have wounds, visible wounds that we are being treated for.

Violet: That's what I wanted to find out from you

Grace Kwinjeh: Sekai Holland broke three ribs, broke an arm, broke a leg. I have internal head injuries, I have soft tissue injuries. And you know you saw Dr Lovemore Madhuku, you saw President Morgan Tsvangirai, Nelson Chamisa we know what happened to him, even after the 11 th March, what happened to him at Harare International Airport.

Violet: So in your case, what sort of treatment are you receiving? I understand you are in the same hospital with 64 year old Amai Holland, what treatment is she also receiving if you know?

Grace Kwinjeh: Well, a lot of treatment that includes a lot of therapy because what we went through this is really a nightmare and part of what we are receiving is therapy, de-briefing for us to get to deal with the trauma. And, we are also receiving specialised treatment. For instance, for me it's the internal head injuries. In Zimbabwe you know they could only scan that I had a swollen brain but did not have the right technology to deal with these. So here again there's the right technology for them to deal with the head injuries and the dizziness that I'm suffering from. Mrs Holland has had two operations so far and she still can't walk by the way. She is still bed ridden.

Violet: And in your article recently entitled the 'Woman in Me' you said you did not cry or beg for mercy and that none of the other victims on that day when you were arrested on the 11 th March cried or begged for mercy or denounced the Party or in any way tried to negotiate a way out of being brutalised. Now, was this position planned beforehand?

Grace Kwinjeh: Was this?

Violet: was this position planned beforehand that people would not cry and you know?

Grace Kwinjeh: No, everyone was, didn't know they would get tortured. You don't plan torture, none of the people there knew or felt or even could foresaw that we could get tortured. The least we knew was that we would be arrested. The torture and the shock that came with that torture was amazing but not crying really was this just extraordinary strength that just overcomes you. I think it's just something that comes from God you know because these people are really brutalising you, you know, they want to kill, you know the things that they are doing to you. But, it's amazing that of the people who were there, the more than thirty of us, none of the people, everyone just withstood the pain because they would take turns around people, especially around the leadership. If they call up Sekai Holland then they are beating her non stop, then Lovemore Madhuku, Grace Kwinjeh, Morgan Tsvangirai and so on. But you know you just get an extraordinary strength from God. You know something just makes you look at evil in its eye, and you just look at it and bear it and of course they did beat us up like that.

Violet: What did they use when they were beating you and can you identify the attackers?

Grace Kwinjeh: Yes, I saw two of them in Court when we were in Court later on, on the 13 th March. But they were using all sorts of weapons. I was beaten up, for instance parts of my ear came off, they were using a metal bar about a metre long. You know, a metal bar on my head. That's really attempted murder. And I couldn't even see that part of my ear was off until much later when they were secretly transferring us from Machipisa to Harare Central Police Station. So I was bleeding from the head, and I thought it's my head bleeding and then later I touched and I felt this thing sticking out of my ear and it turns out that part of my ear was off. So they were using all sorts of weapons even army belts and then kicks. You know the woman who danced on Sekai Holland was wearing these thick winter boots so you know this was something they had planned in advance. It's hot in Zimbabwe right now, we're in the height of summer and you know she's in these thick, thick long winter boots, the ones you get in the United Kingdom with fur inside. And, she is dancing on Sekai, she danced on William Bango's head. So

Violet : Did these people look like they were intoxicated because you can imagine Amai Sekai Holland is, as I said before, 64 years old, and you can tell that she's a grandmother? Now you know when this woman, this other woman was dancing on top of her and beating her like this, did they look like people who were sober, you know, who really knew what they were doing?

Grace Kwinjeh: It's not about them being sober but it's about it, I think, representing the kind of ZANU PF politics that we have to deal with in Zimbabwe . The level of intolerance, the level of brutality when a regime or a political party is challenged. You know what, the kind of venom you get from ZANU PF politicians, what you got now from Kembo Mohadi, that event there just crystallised all that, just shows you what ZANU PF is and what it stands for.

Violet: And also Grace you wrote in your article, and I quote and you said 'and so, as is the case too often in Opposition politics, the attack on us women was more on our sexuality'. Now what do you mean by this?

Grace Kwinjeh: Yes because it was about our bums, the colour of my hair and different things, being called whores and so on or the husbands, the colour of husbands we have chosen to marry, as in the case of Sekai Holland. But none of the male colleagues were assaulted or insulted in that way. For them it was really political, so if they were beating up Lovemore Madhuku it's because he's leading NCA demos and etc. So, the attack on women, you know, the way rape is used as a weapon. Look at what is happening to women in Sudan for instance. Look at what happens in war situations, the way rape has often been used as an instrument. It'sthe way you know the ZANU PF thugs were using our sexuality against us.

Violet: So do you believe that you were brutalised and treated in this way mainly because you are a woman?

Grace Kwinjeh : Yeah

Violet: I mean do you mean there's a campaign of violence directed against women by the Mugabe regime.

Grace Kwinjeh: Yes. But then, that kind of violence when they call you whores and so on, is also characteristic you know of the misogynistic nature of our environment. The intolerance against women, especially women who come out in leadership or in the public sphere, women who are challenging certain things about the society. And the only way the male colleagues can deal with you is by calling you 'whore', then you are finished, you have to shut up. And, unfortunately that kind of politics is not in ZANU PF alone but you find it even in Opposition politics, you find it even with fellow male journalists, you find it everywhere. The only way to silence a woman is by calling her a 'hure' (whore) and on this day unfortunately it was in such a violent and brutal manner which was really terrible.

Violet: And you know, in a way violence against women goes against our culture and what boys are taught by their parents. Now, it may sound like a repetition but do you believe that the Mugabe regime has to use particular people like psychopaths or youths high on drink and drugs to commit acts of violence against women in this particular case?

Grace Kwinjeh: Yes, I think for them to perpetrate that kind of violence they have to be intoxicated by something and you could see after the four hours the heart beating. You could see later on at Harare Central Police Station for instance when some of them started to sober up, you could see that they were really afraid of what they had done. And that's the unfortunate bit of it, that they are used at that moment and once that really I feel sorry for the youth, the 16 year olds, 18 year olds, 20 year old youth who are involved in the militia who are given drugs and they carry out these acts of violence, these unlawful acts of violence and then later on they have to face the consequences.

Violet: So what was going through your mind when this was happening?

Grace Kwinjeh: Nothing. You just look at them. Nothing you know, nothing happens, you freeze, everything in you freezes temporarily. And for me, I was tortured on that day and then later on they came to torture me again in the cells. Nothing happens. You know, it's one of those moments that you just stop thinking and look at evil, like I said.

Violet: Now you have made enormous sacrifices, both physical and material, leaving your young family to fight for change in Zimbabwe . Do you wish now that you had taken an easier path?

Grace Kwinjeh: No, not at all, not at all. I think the struggle continues and I think many of the comrades who are in the struggle, many of the comrades I was told that those who are in remand who have been denied bail are actually in high spirits. There's something about it Violet, when you are there Violet and you are feeling it and going through it, there's something about it that just gives you enormous strength and that just tells you that God is on your side. And so, I don't regret it at all, I think that it's really my fate or my destiny, I had to go, that's why I had to go back to Zimbabwe, I had to be part of the leadership at this phase of our political history. And I think it's an important phase because it's going to lead us somewhere and I think that's why the regime is panicking.

Violet: And just before you left for South Africa with Mai Sekai Holland you had been released, you know, to a hospital under Riot Police guard and then you were arrested again whilst trying to leave the country to go for urgent medical treatment in South Africa . How do you interpret the actions of the government then and were you very afraid when you were being denied that chance or that right to leave the country for treatment?

Grace Kwinjeh: Yeah it's scary, it's really scary. What they did is, we were in a MARS Ambulance, so they actually let us get all the way to the airport and it was at the airport that they turned us back. First we had stopped at Harare Central Police station where our lawyers were talking to them trying to negotiate that we had to leave and that there were no charges against us. If you remember that the State could not present its case to the Magistrates' Court so there were no charges, everybody was free. But then, we were told 'no, that was not the case' So we were brought back under police guard, we had to sleep with Riot Police in front of us with guns and having been tortured, you imagine that the people who tortured you are there in front of you and you are trying to sleep. So it's a very nasty traumatic experience which I hope never to go through again in my life. So we had them on 24 hour guard from Sunday up to Wednesday. And then on Wednesday when we managed to get a Court Order that we could leave the country that is when they left and on Wednesday night we managed to sleep well.

Violet Gonda: And Grace what about the issue of the way forward? What are your views concerning the regional initiative to bring the political parties together?

Grace Kwinjeh: I think that's good for the political parties together. In any war situation, time comes when the warring parties have to get together and come up with a settlement. But, what needs to be understood are the basis upon which those parties are coming together and what they have to come up with. We have had the experience of 2000, we've had the experience of 2002, we've had you know numerous experiences where ZANU PF will pretend to be doing something, you know to be negotiating in good faith and yet on the other hand they are in reverse gear to what's being discussed or what is getting agreed upon. So, I think that this time round, and the use of violence as a negotiating tool, I think that is wrong. Because what Mugabe is doing now, he is saying OK I'm going to abduct, I'm going to arrest, I'm going to kill as many people so by the time these folks come and people come round the table you are negotiating and three journalists get killed, not five. You are negotiating that 15 journalists get arrested not 30 and negotiating that the Opposition be allowed to hold rallies under POSA when we know POSA is wrong. So what they are basically doing is raising the tempo so that at the end of the day whatever we get as Zimbabweans, we are so desperate that we say yes this is what we want. But that is wrong.

We want what is basic. We want internationally accepted norms and standards of democratic practice. We don't want you know, mediocrity, the kind of mediocrity that we've been having in Zimbabwe since 2000. I'm here in South Africa ; they are enjoying certain things freely like that. There is an article, for instance, in one of the newspapers today; there is a woman who is complaining that she got her passport after six weeks. This is a passport after six weeks; the public is outraged. In Zimbabwe having a passport has now become a privilege. So we are saying in Zimbabwe we want to live well like in other countries in the region and other countries internationally. But butchering us into succumbing is really wrong and I hope that President Mbeki this time round realises that no, we have to have certain solid understanding of what we want to achieve. Otherwise, like the efforts in 2000 and 2002 nothing much is going to be achieved.

THE FUNERAL PARLOUR THAT HAS BECOME ZIMBABWE

(How do I welcome people at a wake?)

I meant to welcome all of us right here a few weeks ago but the evil that is being perpetrated in our country left me shell-shocked. I found us, as a nation, in mourning.

We keep dying and coming back to life. Anyone who never believed in zombies should come to Zimbabwe.

It was Frenchman Jean-Paul Sartre who said hell is other people.

Are we?

The three weeks of madness that the world witnessed in Zimbabwe, only a fraction of decades of torture we in Zimbabwe have endured, should help to make the world understand that Hitler left seeds and had disciples; that many Lucifers are alive and well and living in State Houses.

The pictures of the swollen lips and faces of legislators, parliamentarians and leader of an opposition party that you saw came at a price. For you to see that, we had to lose one of our own.

I find it just about impossible to believe and accept that Robert Mugabe, a man born of a woman, can be so casual about the lives of fellow citizens.

Mugabe has used state funds and apparatus to sharpen the fangs of our youths and then turn them into cannibals. Today, we witness the aging egos of irrelevant manipulators calling upon our children to die and to kill on their behalf as we are shoved haphazardly into a corner like discarded shopping carts in a supermarket parking lot.

Our youths, with insufficient education, jobless, hungry, misguided, desperate and without leadership, have now been turned into connoisseurs of murder and mayhem, preying on fellow citizens, and indeed their own kith and kin, who have not committed any crime against them but who are perceived to have wronged the ageing murderers and thieves in our nation.

So, these same despairing youths, from our very own loins, killed Edward Chikomba, just because some washed-up, weather-beaten old scallywag wanted to hide his political poo. Chikomba was killed for carrying out his duties, for informing his own people and the world about the brutality of the murderous Robert 'Pol Pot' Mugabe.

But the scariest thing is the lack of remorse in people, Africans, who were dispatched to assassinate Chikomba. Is this how to fight imperialists or whoever it is the old geezer sees in his daydreams?

The ghosts are in the State House grounds and they are not going to let up. The man has killed too many and no human blood can ever be spilled just for nothing.

Dust to dust and ashes to ashes, yes, indeed.

But when that dust or ashes have blood of murdered innocent Africans, don't be surprised to see some 'honourables' chasing and swatting imaginary cockroaches in airplanes.

Mugabe had to tell his wife and children about Edward Chikomba. He had to say something to them since, to him, Chikomba was a threat not only to the nation, as if the whole lot, including pa himself, are patriots, but to them. The 'First Family' must be smiling as they see one perceived 'enemy of the state' having been decimated and, thus, their welfare, once again, assured.

But you do know, don't you, that someone is going to pay for all these heinous crimes? Whether Mugabe dies in office or not these atrocities will be avenged. What Mugabe is doing everyday is to ensure that his family will never live in peace wherever they will end up long after the dictator had been shoved six feet under.

I knew Edward Chikomba.

I worked with Edward for many many years at the then Zimbabwe Broadcasting Corporation (ZBC). He was the technical director on many of my television programmes. I found him there when I returned home from school abroad and I left him there when I was, not surprisingly, forced out of my job. Edward was at the ZBC not because any of those notorious 'chefs' and corrupt party and government 'stalwarts' did him a farvour. He was there because he knew his job and he knew it well. Amiable and a perfectionist, Edward was not the kind of person anybody would have suspected to be manhandled and die in such a barbaric and horrible manner. No one can imagine a government or a president ever doing such a thing to his own citizens.

One of our own is down at the hands of a government that is supposed to protect us all. I recall our former colleagues at the ZBC, people like the musical Dick 'Comrade Chinx' Chingaira and Thomas (Tommy) Mandigora, who now represents our nation in Botswana. Tommy and Chinx, is it okay guys?

Advise me.

What do we do?

We can't just keep quiet.

We are hungry for freedom and deliverance; so hungry are we that we are cannibalizing ourselves to please irrelevant and evil men.

Every time I look in the mirror, I smile as I applaud myself for something I consider nice that I might have done. I have caught myself turning my eyes away from the mirror when I recall some not so good deeds that I might have been involved in. A mirror reflects a reality and when one looks into their own eyes, something stirs inside.

Does Mugabe have a mirror in his many residences? What goes on in his mind when he stares at himself?

And what romantic fantasies flow though Grace Mugabe's mind when she looks first at the wrinkled murderer lying next to her and then at the battered body of a dead parent recovered from a bush. How does it feel to her to know that in order for her to enjoy undeserved extravagance, someone's son, father and husband must die? Grace and Gabriel. Such noble names from God's lexicon of decency but yet the twin centres of greed, murder, intolerance and viciousness in a lovely country called Zimbabwe. How come a mother to the nation does not feel compelled to count her chicks only all the time?

And to Edward, my dear fellow, I say: 'Rest well, my friend. You can never be forgotten. Not even by Mugabe himself. Mugabe's archives are full of photographs, documentaries and news items that you, yourself, filmed. We will not let you evaporate. You are with us and we are with you. Rest well, my friend. Just remember that some cowards made a hero out of you and we are damn proud of that.

You didn't lose anything, Eddie, but we lost a history maker and Mugabe should remember your overburdened shoulders as you captured him on arrival from Mozambique fooling everybody, including you, about his intentions about Zimbabwe. Like the rest of us, you believed him. Today he has killed you for doing your job so well. You have not lost but we, including Mugabe himself, have lost.

From your demise, dear friend, I have learned never to wrestle with a pig because, you see, if you do, you both get dirty. And the pig likes it.

We need not fight Mugabe at all. Oh, no, it is not necessary. We just have to remove him. And no individual is working on that, Eddie. Everybody is working on that. You did your part, Eddie. Rest well, dear brother.'

The Heart of the Matter....

...... is that, because of Mugabe and his shameless popinjays, Zimbabwe has become a funeral parlour. We are being killed by ourselves. It need not be like this. Mugabe is marveling at the resilience of this nation. He came down on it with the entire devil's power and failed. Yet, today, we are passing condolences amongst ourselves. But there is no disease outbreak. There are no flash floods washing away our homes and loved ones. There is only Robert Gabriel Mugabe, ironically named after one of God's more famous and farvourite angels, causing death and destruction. Like that late reggae musician said "Mugabe is doing the devil's evil."

I love Zimbabwe.

It is a beautiful country full of beautiful people and that has nothing to do with Mugabe.

My compatriots, I salute you and please let's meet here often. Let us share ideas. Let us talk to each other. This site is only an enabler. No one is going to talk to anyone. We are going to talk to each other. We have a common goal. Love you lot's and Zimbabwe should be ready for the very first Chimurenga, not the fake chimurengas geared to extol a tyrant.

Mugabe: The recessional hymn begins

WHEN Mr. Morgan Tsvangirai, leader of the Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) told BBC's Sunday AM programme a fortnight ago that the political crisis in Zimbabwe had approached its "tipping point", the world was, once more, put on the alert. For all the wrong reasons there are on planet earth, Mr. Robert Mugabe's Zimbabwe has forced its way to the front burner of international political discourse, thereby shrinking further, the ailing image of the African continent.

Mr. Mugabe had, in response to mounting opposition to his desire to run for re-election as president next year, deployed, in a most crude fashion, the coercive apparatuses of the state against his compatriots, who legitimately seek change. By the time the dust of the crackdown had settled, Mr. Tsvangirai and Mr. Nelson Chamisa, Member of Parliament, were left thoroughly beaten, with the former's skull fractured. Government has, as it's wont to do, through Mr. Sikanyiso Ndlovu, Minister for Information, since denied state involvement in the incident on BBC Focus on Africa (they have subsequently eaten their own words when it dawned on them that it was just impossible to continue playing the Ostrich).

It was for these - and more, that Mr. Tendai Biti, MDC's Chief Scribe, as Southern African Development Community (SADC) leaders converged in Tanzania (with Zimbabwean crisis top on their agenda), appealed thus: "...we hope they (SADC leaders) will be strong against Mugabe and tell him he has had 27 years of uninterrupted, peaceful rule in Zimbabwe, and should go." Days later, Mr. Mugabe's Party, Zanu-PF, armed him with their presidential flag.
Zimbabwe nay, Africa, does not need a crystal ball to know that tougher and uncertain times await Zimbabweans as they march to their election year 2008. Zimbabwe should face it: the countdown to the zero hour will be painful. It might be bloody also. Liberation, as a matter of rule, comes with a price. The good news, however, is that government's resort to brute force in its desperate bid to quell voices of dissent reveals, quite instructively, the diminishing strength of its semantics, sophistry and pseudo-nationalism preachments, which it had hitherto relied upon to stifle alternative political view points. Owing to this fact, it won't be surprising, therefore, to see a highly inflammable Mugabe in the days ahead, who would not mind razing down the entire Zimbabwean edifice in an attempt to contain the equally highly inflammable temerity of the change agents he restrictively perceives, in error, as mere political rivals.
In fairness to Mr. Mugabe though, what is left of his political ideology is not useless in its totality. For instance, given the historical circumstance of Zimbabwe and her evolutionary process, part of which he has actively been in the past 27 years, Mr. Mugabe's anti-west posture is, in part, justifiable; or, at least, understandable. It is, nonetheless, regrettable that his glaring hostility towards the west runs through the entire gamut of his political philosophy.
Partly justifiable because, it is an eternal truth that the West, from the era of slave trade, through colonialism, apartheid, cold war, to globalisation, had never demonstrated genuine commitment to the Blackman cause. Some Africans, including Mr. Mugabe, wish they did otherwise. But it is a mere wish! Whilst the veiled demand for it is illegitimate, baseless and illogical. Much as we continue to bear the pains of slave trade, colonialism and neo-colonialism with all their devastating manifestations, Africa must realise that what she inadvertently wish for is a subsidy from the West for the former's lack of purpose and self-hate.
Without meaning to hold the brief of the West (and I have argued same elsewhere), what the West have always done is to mind their business without necessarily minding how injurious their minding their business is to the business (if any) of the Blackman. It is, therefore, thought that the failure of the Blackman to erect solid walls around his own business to ward-off usually probable injury arising from the Whiteman's activities should rightly be seen as gross negligence on the part of the Africans.
For, it is escapist for the Blackman to turn around and demonise the Whiteman, who did not flout any enforceable rule but, merely strayed morally. But the Zimbabwean experiment vis-a-vis the perception and attitude of Mr. Mugabe is a lot more complex. Cast in the mould of a purposeful leader, Mr. Mugabe, upon assumption of office in 1980, came across as an articulate, world class intellectual, who could, by sheer display of responsive leadership, differentiate between colonial Rhodesia and a free Zimbabwe. But, like some of his brother African leaders, it did not take quite long for him to set self apart from community. From self-conceit, he slid into power-mania, and further into tyranny. At the moment, he dons the garb of a pseudo-intellectual, and stands out as a good portrait of Africa's leadership failure.
Unfortunately, this bull in Zimbabwe China Shop is still seen as a hero in certain quarters. Unknown to his fan club, the West needs us. They do not wish we perish; rather, they would gladly pay for our preservation so that the exploitation may not cease. Whilst it is our duty to insist on the cessation of the exploitation, we owe it a duty to ourselves and more to posterity to insist on co-existing with the rest of the world without being exploited. Note, however, that refusing to be exploited entails having a good grasp of the dynamics, trends as well as inter-relationship between world politics and economy, with a view to walking away with the most favourable bargain possible. Today's world differ markedly from 1980s; this Mr. Mugabe has repeatedly failed to acknowledge, and it is doubtful he will ever do.
Since breathing facts say the combined result of Mr. Mugabe's famed bravado, economic aluta and unparalleled sense of nationalism is a crumbling economy, the people of Zimbabwe must, while conceding to his legitimate right to fly his party's presidential flag at next year's general elections, take Mr. Mugabe on at the poll. The rest of Africa feel the pains of your ruler's horse-whip; we share in the pestilence that his 27 years in power have embarrassingly become; and we sure reckon that you deserve better.
The task before the Zimbabwean nation is to strengthen opposition by waging a full-scale war against misery, despair, self-glorification and blind despotism. The showdown must commence now.

Directionless opportunists? Opinion By Lameck Funduka I thought Mike Davis and the Combined Harare Residents Associations (Chra) were with us until I read his interview with Violet Gonda on SW Radio, attached below. Munyaradzi Gwisai who was also in the interview showed a remarkable failure to mature, or is it naked ambition on part of both gentlemen? While acknowledging the need for unity, they tried to find any excuse they could to say the MDC was not the appropriate party to lead that unity, yet all the efforts that they were pointing to as successes in mobilising the people can be directly attributed to the MDC. The reason is simple; they think that by acknowledging the MDC they will have lost the possibility of getting into political power themselves. I say slow down brothers; we are in this together and it's not too late to come back. Mike has had a flirtation with organising Harare residents to demand their civic and consumer rights and now thinks they are his his people. I say, Remember Trudy Stevenson! And I do not mean it from a racial point of view, just that as soon as you lose direction they will also show you the door. It is clear that Gwisai wants to use the now mobilised masses in his International Socialist agenda, which he does not care when it comes to fruition, as long as he has pushed worker consciousness that much further - even at the expense of postponing the deposition of the current regime and perpetuating the suffering. Even WOZA, which was not in the interview but was being referred to as another centre for grassroots initiative, seems to be fumbling in the dark while refusing to recognise the leadership of MDC in any united movement that might succeed in mobilising the masses for the final push. First, WOZA was part of the civic partnership, then it was not, then it was consulting its members about whether they wanted to be in the campaign, then it was demanding through the Press for that matter, representation in the SADC negotiations. I am glad it has gone back to the electrical power struggle with Zesa. The SADC negotiations, even if they were to succeed, are not going to make Zimbabwe's future social order. It is still going to be decided by us the Zimbabweans and our Zimbabwean institutions, party cells, local community organisations, and people, WOZA and Chra included, because they are the ones working in these areas of social policy. But demonstrating inclusion in what are essentially political negotiations between the two powers which have been recognised by the SADC as necessary to bring about the transition to peace and democracy in Zimbabwe, was completely misplaced. The MDC through Mbeki's initiative is not negotiating the Constitution of Zimbabwe or the social policy just how Mugabe can be persuaded, pressured or otherwise kicked to step aside for the benefit of his people. Of course the power of the MDC to be so recognised also comes from its partners, and their withdrawal weakens it, but they should recognise that they are under the umbrella of the Save Zimbabwe Campaign or the Crisis Campaign representing their particular social policies, not in the political power structure of MDC. MDC itself is still struggling with elements within it about whether they should be united by being incorporated in the leadership, which the MDC President has said is not possible, leading to an attack from Job Sikhala at St Mary's where Sikhala said Tsvangirai is a Zanu (PF) sellout. Grapes are sour indeed. The civics must not be deceitful and say we are fighting for children's rights, consumers' rights, civic participation rights or socialism, then, when they have opened our eyes so that we can see for ourselves that the MDC represents all these ideals, they start telling people that the MDC is not the right party to lead them trying to destroy the very house whose foundation they helped to build. This is pure opportunism and it shows up in such contradictions. They mobilised the masses for the struggle, using their various tactics; the masses joined them, and together created the conditions for sustainable mass action. Now that the masses also see for themselves that their power to make a change comes from their united efforts and they gravitate towards the main stream, the leaders think they must stop them because they should be driving. In one breath they criticised the international travelling and networking that the MDC leadership is doing and in the next they praise it for having been effective in mobilising the international community. It is clear they are trying to find reasons for negating the MDC for selfish reasons. How can they be left out in race in which they never declared their intentions to run? I think it is time that opportunists within the civic movement were denounced for what they are. Their members, i.e. Chra and WOZA are already supporters if not full members of the MDC and should be told that their leaders are misleading them. I think a clear message should go out to members that they are being led in some of these coalition partners by people who are trying to achieve political power by deceiving their members that they are fighting for residents' rights, socialism, women's or whatever it is. Right now the crucial thing is creating a level playing field so that even the NDAs, the ZUMs, the Federal Parties and any new formations may be able to campaign freely, and in this struggle we need everybody. When it is most crucial that they should lead their members to the united final push to create the conditions for a free and fair election, so that we can start creating the society we want, they start trying to hold back, while trying to negotiate themselves into political leadership. Suddenly everyone wants drive the political bus. Who is going to be there still fighting for the women's rights, the community rights, for the inclusion rights for marginalised communities; who is going to oversee the drafting of a people's constitution, who is going to represent the residents of towns and cities, and hold the new political leaders to account for their promises. Is the MDC government not going to consult these same organisations that were its partners in pushing out the dictator about its social policy? I should think in the affirmative. And, of course, if it does not they have every right to also show it some Tough Love all over again. So for me there is no privatisation of the democracy struggle by the MDC, rather there is an attempt to privatise the masses by those who are the MDC's partners and working with the masses. Fortunately the masses have an inherent capacity to refuse to be privatised because their interests do not change - food, shelter, good living and better living, and yes participation in the running of their affairs.
